Love And Lust In The Wasteland - OOC and Casting
This is the place to post character designs, questions, comments, etc. ad infinitum... Feel free to PM me about anything, but please post here before posting in the actual IC thread.

Basic setting background, to give an idea of the character possibilities, the time frame, and the like...

In the great cleansing fire of the Catastrophe, or The Great Cleansing as it has since come to be known, seventy five percent of the world’s population perished. Those who survived gave way under the un-ending tides of disease, famine, and general hopelessness that had gripped their hearts like a cold vice. A mere six months after the last of the bombs had fallen, the populations of the world’s continents numbered barely a few percent of it’s once proud billions.

Nomadic tribes of people are the norm and majority nowadays, traveling from place to place to place in hopes of finding something to eat, making a living however they can. Some fancy themselves traders, selling dry goods, arms and the like. Others have fashioned themselves as modern day Highwaymen, laying waste to all in their path and extolling great tolls from other travelers for the “privilege” of using their roadway.

Settlements rise and fall over time, changing little in the overall landscape besides making the cold, dark nights a little bit brighter with their fire light, their sparse laughter and their not-always-human warmth. Indeed caravans, tribes, even whole settlements have arisen of those not belonging to the “human” race, if any these days can be sure it still exists in its old form. Robots of varying makes and models can be found all over. Dwarves, humanoids shriveled over time by birth defects and radiation and disease cluster in the north, although some are found as far south as the great salt flats. Zombies, which go by many names; Infected, Diseased, Blighted, although the currently favored term is Forsaken, litter the landscape with their rotting corpses and vile pathogens. Mixed breeds, formed of all the previously prevalent forms of life can be found scattered throughout the world; products of gene splicing and genetic recombination - technology which although discouraged and unfunded before the Cleansing, now thrives as a black market service.

Cities are hulking wrecks, rusted out specters looming high against the bleak grey sky as reminders of what once and shall never be again. In consequence many avoid them, preferring the settlements and the roads, although Scavs, or scavengers hole up in abandoned buildings everywhere. There are even rumors that great militias travel between them, searching for technology and new recruits. There are worse rumors about how these recruits are press-ganged into service, forcibly taken from their lives like militaristic gypsies.

We do what we must to survive, and thus martial law prevails.

Are you planning on a single group of survivors working together against the elements and NPCs or two (or more) player groups in conflict with eachother?

Something that starts everyone together, at least at first. That way there aren't too many worries about nobody finding each other, people setting up their own little kingdoms and the like... But, if it turns into a "one group vs. another" situation, then so be it, the story will flow where it wants, depending on the characters' choices. For the basic premise, I had envisioned something like a cross between The Dark Tower, by Stephen King; and Damnation Alley, by Roger Zelazny. Starting in the eastern region of the map, and working across towards a common goal on the other side. I'd like to start with some character development, that way we know more or less who's going to be shaping the rest of the story. All are welcome and any and all insights, comments, concerns, etc. are welcome either here in the OOC or by PM.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I'd like to be human but I'll leave the profile details until others have posted. What role/s are you going to play yourself ZD?

I believe I'm going to take on two roles, at least at the start. A modified human and a dwarf. I'm working up the character bios right now and I would love to see your character when you get a chance, yv... And I appreciate your enthusiasm.

Do you think there'd be room for a mad scientist (maybe doctor) who is trying to cure or control the Forsaken? Either she wants to save what is left of the world or create an army of zombies take it over... I can't decide.

She has had some marginal successes mostly due to fortunate circumstances and this has made her a little over confident. (Zombies are so fun to tease...)

Just a kernel so far.

Sounds like a great addition. Welcome to the party doctor! ;) There should always room be for the benevolent turned mad. Besides, why have zombies unless you're going to have some fun with them? I think a mad scientist/doctor could go either way, and whichever way you decide to go with this I think it will be a great addition.

I've been a bit reluctant to get involved in more group threads as I've not had great experiences with them (people vanishing, getting bored etc), but this sounds interesting. Dark future and zombies!

I've got some preliminary thoughts about a character. Probably a fairly standard human (perhaps with genetic resistance to radiation), male, early 30s. An engineer, mechanic, technician, electrician, and scavenger who relies on his skills and wits to stay alive. Survival is the name of the game as far as he's concerned, and only the fittest survive. He'll work for (or with) whoever gives him the best chance to survive and thrive.

Does that sound on the right lines?

Yours sounds like a great character MrAdam, very much in line with the slightly gloomy and darker atmosphere of the settings. That said, the best stories of this genre always have a subtle and not always apparent undercurrent of optimism, as otherwise they just grind themselves down in their own pessimism. Your character will fit in perfectly, as he seems to have that optimistic spark, most readily seen in his will to live and carry on despite the state of affairs of the world around.

**************************************************

This seems a good place to begin the character building process. before we begin the IC (in character) posts, it would be best if everyone who wishes to be involved post here with their characters; i.e.; name, gender, race, a little background, general apprearence (pictures or picture links are welcome additions for this, of course) and anything else you wish to include in your character's outline. After everyone has their characters set we can begin our adventure in the rough and unruly wastelands and see what trouble and intrigue our bands can get up to. Sound good? I certainly hope so ;)

Thank you to all those participating, I know this is going to be a good thread!

I think we probably need a bit more background or a rough idea of the starting situation or a common hook before we can finalise characters. Otherwise we can end up with a lot of incompatibility.

I'm thinking that my character might be with a nomadic group of vicious, ruthless marauding land pirates - taking what and who they need where they can, trading where they can't, or where there is some advantage. But I'm open to other ideas.

Hmmmm... I have an idea for a mutant, he was at one point a very good scientist in genetics, chemistry and mechanics when the bombs hit and the radiation spread he didn't die, instead he mutated. His eyes became solid flesh, making him blind, his face shifted into that of a horse, his legs grew hooves, his teeth turned razor sharp like daggers, his hands shifted and his five fingers grew into three thick fingers and one thick thumb on each hand, he grew a long reptilian tail, his hair turned into a red mane the flowed down his spine and his body grew to an height of nine point seven feet.

I was thinking of him as a horse version of chewbacca, strong as an ogre but intelligent and kind as well.

Ok, profile...

Name: Lena
Age: 24
Looks: As pictured below. Petite at just 5ft tall, 32C breasts. Skin has a slightly green/brown tinge and her eyes are a rich, dark green.

http://th08.deviantart.net/fs26/300W/i/2008/123/7/a/the_green_girl_by_klaus1987.jpg

Bio: Lena was a young teenager when a band of nomadic bandits broke open the fallout bunker Lena was born in, robbed her parents and killed them when they retaliated. She was left abandoned in a highly radioactive area, forced to scratch an existence alone in the wastes from food and water that were all radioactive and caused genetic mutation as she went through puberty. Lena became nomadic herself, wandering for miles and miles through the deserted danger zone, seeking civilisation of some kind. As her complexion changed and her appearance deviated from that of 'normal' humans, she was shunned wherever she went. Lena's life became a mostly solitary one.

At 18 she was picked up by a scientist who was interested in finding out the precise nature of her genetic mutation. It was through him she discovered the extra abilities she had the other people lacked. He was by no means a nice man however and Lena suffered physical, psychological and sexual abuse at his hands before she eventually escaped and made her own way once more. She had nothing in the way of resources except her own body and having learned from the scientist that she was barren, Lena soon found herself trading sex for basic necessities along the way. Even her odd appearance didn't deter most men once they'd had a few to drink and she'd worked her charms. She wasn't above honey-trapping either; beating unpleasant and abusive men unconscious before taking all their valuables and weapons.

Now at 24 Lena is a seasoned whore and cynical with it. She lives in a fairly well populated area (to be determined by ZD and how things are laid out) on main routes where there's plenty of fresh trade as well as old regulars. She has a certain amount of wealth as those things go and an enviable armoury courtesy of men who couldn't pay their tab. She has no respect for men whatsoever though and never lets one get the rise on her, punishing any liberty taking swiftly and savagely. There are even men who visit her specifically because she has a reputation for being strict and sadistic and she respects these grovelling creatures least of all. Sex these days leaves her completely cold and has done for years.

Mutation: Lena has a hight tolerance to both radiation and UV. Her skin gains nutrients from the blazing sun through photosynthesis so she can survive more prolonged starvation than normal humans providing she's adequately hydrated. She can also tolerate low O2/high CO2 environments better than normal humans. Her skin also heals swiftly, which means bruises and shallow wounds heal quite fast. Lena is barren and apparently immune to human STDs or if not, she is extremely fortunate and has yet to contract one. Her vision is very good and she can see better in very low light than normal humans. Because she respires partially through her skin, it is more difficult to choke or drown her.

That's all I've got so far. Thoughts/issues?

Riggs

http://i49.tinypic.com/o0vyfs.jpg

Name: Riggs
Age: 31

Tall, with piercing eyes that seem to see and take in everything, but give away precious little in return. Taciturn and deadpan, there is a strange, almost disconcerting stillness about his manner.

Bio:

Riggs grew up in a district of a ruined city run by a charismatic leader known as Felix. Felix was a benevolent dictator, but led by example and was always ready to listen and consult his followers. His reputation as a just leader attracted many to join with him, and his skill as a politician and trader and as a military commander kept his district of the city relatively safe and stable. Riggs followed in the family trade of maintaining and repairing machines, and became a skilled mechanic, engineer, electrician, and technician. Felix gave the young Riggs a chance to set up his own business in buying wrecked cars and other broken equipment from the Scavengers who came to trade with the city, with the aim of repairing what could be repaired - or else stripping for parts - and selling on for a profit. Sometimes Riggs would join them on their expeditions. His work at repairs and salvage earned him his nickname "Jury Rigger" and eventually just "Riggs."

But after a few years, Felix grew ill, and in spite of the best efforts of his people, he died. None of his lieutenants had his skill, and gradually the community that Felix had built started to fall apart. Riggs saw the writing on the wall, and against the wishes of his family, left the city to run with a group of scavengers full time. Since then, Riggs has hopped from group to group, always looking to survive, always looking for safety in numbers. For although he can handle himself in a fistfight or firefight, Riggs believes that the best defence is to be so strong that no-one dare move against you, as Felix's community had been at its height. While he may regret that no other group he has been with since has had such a leader, or such a united, just, and stable community, he has no qualms about making common cause with virtually any group that will help him stay alive.

His skills have made him a valuable asset to any group, gang, or community, so he has never had any difficulty persuading a new employer to take him on, rather than just killing him for his possessions.

Riggs owns a black all-terrain van which is both his home and workshop. Although it has a number of customisations, including some armour and bulletproof glass and tyres and a few tricks, it is not a military vehicle. The van is stocked with spare parts and tools of his trade, as well as the means with which to protect himself.

Mutations:

Riggs seems to suffer little or no-ill effects from normal radiation. However, this was true of his whole family, and so is probably an inherited trait rather than a direct mutation. Although he is strong and resilient with stamina to burn and is rarely ill and heals quickly, none of these features are beyond the top of the normal ability range for humans.

Relations with other characters:

He could start the game pretty much anywhere - with a group (peaceful or piratical) or looking for a new home. He might have met any number of other characters already on his travels.

i'm interested but won't be active as in on every day but maybe 2 or 3 times a week. I'm sick. I need to know if that'll be a problem. I'll keep up with the story line. The other thing and I was going to do this as a pm, but thought that I'll ask here so everyone knows i received approval.

Riggs may I take some of your history. I was thinking of a girl who is really good with blades, doesn't talk as much (as you do all the talking) she's more like your shadow, pet, whatever. I like the whole coming from a stable background than having to travel. She's really at whatever you say she'll do until she learns to be on her own. Whether you're pushing for her to be her own or pushing for her to continue being your whatever up to you. just need to know if tha's okay. If not I'll come up with something else.

I've got no problems with the thread moving quite slowly as long as it does move. I've had a number of bad experiences when after having put a lot of thought and effort into a character the thread just dries up and people drift off. On one occasion, the person who was supposed to be running it/leading it was off searching for players for yet another group thread. I should be able to post most days, but I'll take quality over quantity every time. But I suppose it depends on what speed other people intend on posting. I guess if timelines / posting times get out of synch, it's always possible to branch off into sub-threads.

Yep, I've got no problem with this, but I think it would have to be defined quite carefully. For Riggs, loyalty, obligation and sentiment come a long way behind his simple desire to survive. An enemy would call him cold, calculating, scheming, and disloyal. A fair weather friend, and an ally of convenience only. And there's more than some truth in that. So there would have to be a good reason for him to take a passenger along for the ride, no matter how attractive or how good with blades. But a tie to his past might do that. Perhaps your character could be Felix's daughter, or have some other connection to his former home. A former crush, perhaps?

Maybe something happened to her that somehow destroyed her independence - maybe something zombie related? Perhaps Riggs rescued her, or more likely found her somewhere, and kept her out of remembrance for who she used to be, and for respect for Felix/her family. But he's now fond of her for her own sake.

Nibbles, your character will definately work in this setting. I look forward to seeing your character "fleshed" out - if you'll forgive the zombie pun...

Drakkwall, your character sounds incredibly different and will fit in well here. Have you thought about where he might start though? As a part of a convoy, a solo drifter or possibly part of a settlement?

MrAdam, I believe your character will provide a great range of possibilities, you just need to choose a starting point for him.

La_Reina, so long as your are able to post every couple of days and keep the story line moving, there shouldn't be any problems. As far as you and Riggs, I'll leave you two to set up your two characters' backstories together, and then we'll go from there.

Great posts so far everybody. Keep up the brilliant writing. See you next post.

Character Profile

First Off, I'd like to thank everyone for their posts this far and their character profiles. Truly amazing ideas.

Name: Grey
Age: Late Twenties, probably
Appearence: As pictured but with dark tan, 6'6" tall, slight limp in right leg, born without Irises yet vision is unimpaired. Various tattoos, occassional scars.

http://weirdzeek.deviantart.com/art/Gun-Slinger-26676407

Pic Problems - see attached link http://weirdzeek.deviantart.com/art/Gun-Slinger-26676407

Bio: Sasha grew up as part of a nomadic group of wanderers and was never sure which ones were his mother and father, if any of them, as the group mingled and all traded duties as easily as well as lovers, on a constant basis. No one kept track of ages or birthdays in the group so he does not know his age, just an approximation. Growing up in a group of traders and mercenaries he was expected to pull his own weight from an early age, which hardened him to the pressures of life and gave him a somewhat gruff demeanor and bearing. Because his group never settled in one place for more than a few days he never had a single place to truly call home aside from their battered old vehicles and occassional camp sites. He grew to distrust larger settlements and instead kept to the roads, standing guard over his group's vehicles and the like. However, all of that changed when several members of his group were killed while haggling over the price of some emaciated (and probably dangerously radiated) cattle. One or two could have been his parents, and two others he had slept with on several occassions. He needed vengeance and so went into the trader's camp and slew everyone there, taking a few guns, supplies, and a few other trinkets from his dead brethren.

Since then his distrust of strangers has deepened and he has moved in and out of settlements, convoys, caravans, tribes and all other various gatherings of people without really being a part of any of them. He learned to survive by his wits, and when those fail, by being the fastest and most accurate shot. Recently he has settled in the eastern territories, earning a living cleaning out "wild life" infestations.

Mutations: High tolerance to radiation, much the same as everyone born out in the wastes. Eyes have no Irises yet absorb light and vision works as well as normal human eyes during daylight, better at night. Others may exist, but have yet to show.

X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X

I believe we have enough people and characters developed that we can figure out our setting. Any thoughts, ideas, questions, concerns, anything at all really?

Katherine de Witt

Age: 25 looks 18
Hair: Black
Eyes: Pale Blue
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 120
http://th02.deviantart.net/fs36/300W/f/2008/262/f/7/Black_hair_by_tknk.jpg

The curiosity of Dr. Emerson de Witt led him to create the first Human/Forsaken hybrid. Using his own genetic material, he fertilized several infected females, and through various scientific methods and assorted atrocities, he eventually produced a child with limited signs of contamination and immunity to further infection. Despite many attempts, Dr. de Witt was unable to repeat his results, and several of Katherine’s brothers and sisters remained as test subjects for their father’s continued experimentation.

Dr. de Witt raised Katherine to continue his work after he was gone but told her nothing of her own place in it. He father saw to it that she received the best education possible in a post-apocalyptic world – he taught everything he could, found libraries of books for her to read, and when necessary imprisoned educated travelers to act as her tutors. Their home was a secure government facility created to protect the scientific and military elite, so Katherine grew up in relative comfort. Surrounded by soldiers and scientists, she learned how to handle most weapons and how to fight dirty.

As it became clearer that the world would never return to normal, official authority broke down and as chaos started to assert itself. Dr. de Witt and Major Clark took control of the base. Clark’s only interest was in finding a cure for his own infected son, Charlie. The boy was a prisoner for years before Clark realized there was nothing left of the boy to cure. Therefore, it seemed only natural that when supplies dwindled, and order once again showed signs of breaking down, and a rift emerged between de Witt and Clark.

No one was surprised when Major Clark killed Dr. de Witt, and no one was sorry to see him go – not even his daughter. With complete access to her father’s notes, Katherine finally learned of her true and unnatural origins. Rather than being appalled, she was thrilled, she always knew she was special, now she know how special. Now she thinks she knows why she always felt close to the Forsaken, as if she could understand them and they her.

While studying his notes, she found a flaw in her father’s work and believes the way to a vaccination may be found in her mother’s medical history. The same anomaly that made Katherine possible may hold the key to a cure. Now, Katherine prepares to leave the facility and make the trek to her mother’s birthplace in search of information about her family. She planned to travel with only her genetically modified Rottweiler, Baz as her companion but Major Clark is insisting that a small squad accompany her.

*************

Katherine is 5’10” tall, but her slender from is properly although not generously curved. She has black hair and light blue eyes. Her skin is unnaturally pale, great exertion or heat is required before her face shows a natural flush or blush. She has an amazing tolerance for pain but is surprisingly very ticklish. Despite the hardships that all survivors face, Katherine looks younger than her years, possibly due to delayed aging caused by her condition. It is unknown how radiation will affect her so she has received all standard immunizations since her birth.

Thanks for this - glad he fits! I think I'm going to see what other characters we have and where they're starting before I decide where to put Riggs. He's flexible. As a default, I'd guess I'd put him in a reasonable size trade hub or settlement, probably somewhere where most people keep the peace either because the traders have enough mercs to keep it, and/or because no-one benefits from turning the trading hub into a battlefield.

I'd probably have him (and possibly La_Reina's character too) having just left a group of scavengers who have split and are going their separate ways. He'll be looking for a new pack, possibly doing some trading and bits and pieces of work to tide him over. Although if he can get enough work and find a safe niche, he might stay.

Edit: how rude of me. Nice characters, everyone!

Nibbles, you've fleshed out your character tremendously. Very interesting backstory there, and very inventive. The picture add was a nice touch too.

MrAdam, you seem to have your character pretty well sewn up, and he/they (with La_Reina - pending you two's approval) will work well anywhere.

X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X

Here's my basic thought for a setting, at least to start.

http://ewkn.deviantart.com/art/Rusty-future-145693791
(I apologize, the picture isn't loading properly, follow the link to see it)

New Hamburg, a small collection of rubble, broken buildings and old artifacts. Some are pre-Cleansing, and others have been brought over time by travelers and settlers, merchants and the like, and even some pieces have been dragged this way by wind, tides and other natural forces. A larger settlement for this area, but not the largest in the eastern region. The town is centered around a large crumbling building, with parts of the settlement being encircled by the crumbling and desicated pre-war monorail line. The town market is arranged around the crumbled sky scraper at the center of town, with small groups of people huddling in the ruins and shanties radiating out from there, with a few small farms interspersed throughout the houses. Bars and taverns and pubs abound everywhere throughout the settlement.

Another slightly different idea:

http://natal-ee-a.deviantart.com/art/This-World-We-Live-In-143314900
(Again, follow the link, I'm having a problem posting the picture directly)

Tree Town, named after a small street sign found near the ruins the settlement is built on that said, "Tre ton" with a bit of graffiti over the missing 'n'. Tree town is more a hovel than a settlement, with rickshaws, teepees and shanties lining the small dirt paths, radioactive dust blowing in the wind and no water anywhere near town aside from the dirty stream running through part of it. Tree Town is by no means a large settlement, and barely qualifies as more than a camp. The order is much looser than other towns in the region, martial law is almost permanently the standard, but usually vigilante justice is quicker, faster and easier.

Anyway, those are my two ideas for opening settings, and we can work the characters in wherever, based on those settings. Any questions, comments, concerns? As always, feel free to post or pm me.

Ok, I know I dropped off the scene a bit and I'm sorry but I've had a few unexpected RL issues. In view of that, because they're pretty much ongoing for me now, I don't think it's a good idea for me to get involved in group threads. My writing time is going to be curtailed for the foreseeable future and I don't want to hold things up and kill the whole thread by slowing it down till everyone gets bored. I'm sorry if my absence has slowed the brainstorming process and I hope you all have a blast with this idea but I just can't commit to it and I think it's best I say so now.

Happy new 2010 people xxx

Sigh... sorry to see you go, but I understand. :( You're more than welcome to find a place and jump right in later on, if you think you can manage it then. Your character showed more than a bit of promise, and we will do what we can in the absence.

On that note, and hoping everyone had a happy holiday, does anyone have any new brilliant ideas to share? I would really like to get the IC up and started, so if anyone has any character/setting ideas they would like to throw in, now would be an excellent time :D

I think we might need some kind of plot focus or some kind of event, but we can discuss that here as we go on. I think there's enough to get the thread started.

Hi all,

Is this thread still going ahead. If it's not too late i would love to join and maybe fill in the deadly whore role i saw has just been vacated. I love the Grim Dark Future

Apologies all for the delay in new posts and the creation of the IC. Other world problems... Silva, it would be great to have you come aboard, I'm sure you'll make an excellent addition to the thread!

Now for the news:

The IC is up! Again, apologies on the delay here, hopefully now that the IC is up everyone can begin posting and start their storylines going. I look forward to a great thread as I know we have some brilliant and prolific writers among us here. Anyway, here's the link:
