Other countries seem to have them, too.

It's funny, Asian countries blaming western porn on their disasters, when they are situated on the Ring of Fire and have had their own noble traditions of porn going back thousands of years.

Hindu porn, remember, not Wahabi Islam. :D

Of course, what's even funnier is that India today is one of the most prudish countries around. Go figure.

Wait. You mean this thread isn't about how to make an asian-pacific fruitcake with rice flour, candied papaya and pineapple brandy?

I'd use dried mango, myself, but I think the idea is valid . . . And macadamia nuts!

Religious nuts are religious nuts, no matter the country or religion.

Still, an exploration of this site will tell you that their porn is just as pornographic as anybody else's....

We have one of those in Aussie. His name is Cardinal George Pell. He wants things here to revert to the 1800's. He would wipe out all gay people if given the option and I think he suspects people are just, generally enjoying their lives too much. Can't have any of that!

His words may be a good thing in the long run.

I'm reminded of the Lisbon Earthquake, which the Church proclaimed was 'God punishing sinners!'

A lot of people decided that the Church was out of its fucking mind and started thinking instead of believing.

The result was the Enlightenment.

Which in turn led to its bastards . . . and this was a good thing?

In the literary version, I concur. However, when it comes to visual depiction, especially in the round, the West has nothing to compare.

Oh I don't know. Pompei is just one little town that happened to be preserved, and it is chock full of blatantly pornographic paintings and sculptures.

It's not clear if the temple carvings in India were intended as erotica in the Western sense. Tanta used sex as a sort of enhanced meditation technique, a means of reaching an ecstastic state that had nothing to do with sexuality.

Of course, there is an lot of blatant BDSM porn in Medieval churches under the guise of depicting the torments of hell.

It's just history. Nations, societies, cultures rise, stagnate and die.

It's why Mr. Saul compares our time to the beginning of the Enlightenment. The old way, religious logic had become a sclerotic system. Everything then had to have a religious rationale. The Enlightenment brought reason to the fore in order to improve that system, but destroyed it instead.

Now the system created by Reason has become sclerotic. Everything must have a 'reasonable' rationale. And like the feudal system it's simply used to ensure the elites keep their riches and power no matter who suffers.

Such a human thing to do. ;)

What can possibly be next?

I was speaking of the artistic ability involved. I've been to Pompeii as well as Herculcneum and Oplantis. The porn on those walls is barely literate, artistically speaking, whereas Khanjanedaro (sp.?) is among the most sublime pieces of sculpture ever produced. This is erotic stimulation raised to the level of the Sistine Chapel!
