Is the AH Forum a washout?

At one time we had a newbie thread but it has slid into the basement and lost for ever. Then a new one was started but our Queen of newbies got sick and it also was lost.

I believe it was Ogg who posted a short history of the AH or something along that line a few years ago but i can't find the thread it was in. Ogg if you know what I'm talking about do you know where it is?

Is this the newbie one you mean?

Making a sub-forum for the politics would require a moderator to move the threads, at least in the short term. There's no way Laurel could keep up with it. Unless Laurel just chooses someone and does it, it will never happen.

We've been through this before, and there are just enough people decrying the thought of any sort of moderation to derail such effort.

Yes, but if it's what Laurel wants to do to solve the problem, then she will. She is the board owner after all.

I personally think the "fear" of a moderator is misplaced. It's not the big bad some think it is.

Not me. I didn't start an AH history thread (or if I did I claim senile dementia) and I don't remember such a thread.

Are you gonna be part of the solution or part of the problem? Your post is part of the problem. If you want to vent your bitterness and anger, go somewhere else. It won't matter a whit ten minutes from now what you think anyway.

Let's just try to talk about writing, flirt and do silly things. Let's just get along.

Look to the mote in your own eye. Call me the "problem" all you want to, but you'll just be revealing your hypocrisy. It takes two to be a problem.

I'm not in the least bit angry - please don't fool yourself that you have any kind of effect on me other than disgust. You've been a dick to me, to Sarahh, and to numerous others for the last few months, and now we're supposed to just look over that, and flirt with you????

Not in this lifetime.

I think the AH is still a great forum. You just have to pick and choose what you want to read. The only issue is trolls and insults and harsh comments, but you can also ignore those who are most offensive. I have always found answers to any questions regarding literature, grammer, books, writing in general and even college courses here . It's amazing! So if by washout you mean that the AH is amazing, informative and a great place for self promotion then yes it certainly is! I love this place!

It wasn't a thead but a post to a thread. It was a history/list of things/facts about the AH. I vaguely remember but I can claim old age also.

I think I remember that post, too. It was about garderobes, wombats, etc. :D

Laurel's Response

Here is Laurel's response to the pm where I asked her about having a political forum or having the threads moved.

Laurel said:
I have no problem moving reported off-topic threads, along with spam. However, first the AH has to decide what is off-topic and what is not - and those guidelines must be enforced universally and fairly. So, if political threads are to be not allowed in the AH, that means all political threads by all users. If all fluff/personal chat threads are to be not allowed, that means all reported chat threads will be moved.

If the AH can put together a concise and complete set of guidelines for what topics are not allowed in the AH - and have 2/3 of the AH approve it in a public poll (public meaning you can see who voted how) - we'll be happy to moderate the forum in accordance with those guidelines.

Hope this helps, and let me know your thoughts!

If the political threads are the only threads outside of spam we want moved, then it will be simple to create a public poll and have everyone vote. What say you?

Go for it, though you may as well use this thread to get opinions on how to word it, and what options to include.

As far as I'm concerned, banish the political threads to a gated community, and that's all.

I'll gladly vote Crim, but I think it's whining by a few, personally, I don't see a problem

How many times do we get to vote? I know 2 who have enough alts to make it whatever they want.

How will you take care of a thread that began as something else, and turned political?

I would think the individual posts could be moved. I know you can take posts out of one thread and merge them with another (in same forum or different one or start a new one with the moved posts.)

If I understand what Laurel said, then anything we decide as a majority is off-topic can be reported whether it's a thread or post.

Here is one of the newbie threads I was talking about. Just-Legal was the Newbie Mistress.

There is a lot of good information in there .

That works.

If the thread goes political and stays that way, off to the dungeon it goes.

If one person flings poo into the thread, their post goes off to the dungeon.

It would actually be possible with this forum software to split, merge, and otherwise contain such posts, but would require a moderator to assist Laurel, most likely.

This is gonna be a Huge PITA...

No, not really. Reported threads go straight to the moderators. If Laurel doesn't appoint one to help, then the notifications will go straight to her and Manu, and they will move them just like they do spam threads.

It may take awhile to clean up existing threads, but new ones will be easy as pie to get rid of.
