The Global Warming hysteria is another massive tax grab and welfare program for lawyers.

I don't even want to start this stupid argument again, but just for the record, the exponential slope of the graph has been debated for some time, but the overall trend is not doubted by any serious mainstream atmospheric scientist.

Warming data comes not only from tree-ring studies, which have always been known to be an iffy source of information, but from C-14 levels in fossil invertebrate shells, and--most incontrovertibly--from isotopic ratios of O-16/O-18 in ancient precipitates taken from antarctic and Greenland ice core sample.

The data is indeed inconvenient, but it's true.

Speaking in percentage terms, there are many more atmospheric scientists who believe in global warming than there are biologists who believe in evolution.

These researchers are not hoaxers, they aren't charlatans, and they aren't fools.

You know, a hundred thousand years ago you could go out and crap wherever you wanted and it didn't much matter. Then civilization started and there were more people and suddenly it mattered where you threw your shit.

Then the industrial revolution happened and suddenly there were enough people and enough garbage to contaminate the rivers and lakes. So we had to put a stop to that.

Now there are even more people--many, many times more--and we're finding we can't just dump our crap into the atmosphere. We're contaminating it.

Outside of the fact that this means it won't be business as usual, what is so fucking shocking about this discovery? Outside of the fact that we might actually have to get up off our asses and do something, what is so hard to believe?

All these people screaming about the myth of global warming are the same ones who were predicting the End of Civilization if chlorofluorocarbons were banned to protect the ozone level, or cars were required to have catalytic converters to eliminate smog-inducing NOx emissions.

Well, CFC's were banned by international treaty in 1987 and we survived. Survived quite handsomely, as I recall. And the ozone layer is reappearing!

Oh my God! Could those lying, left-leaning, anti-American egghead scientists have been right?!?! Could the government have actually done something to save our asses?

Naw. Just coincidence, I'm sure.

Let's be clear about this too. The danger we face from atmospheric CO2 excess is not just that the temperature will go up by a few degrees, but that it might make things just warm enough to melt some of the arctic the permafrost and release gigatons of trapped CO2 and methane into the atmiosphere in one giant "shot".

Both of these are greenhouse gases and would raise the temperature more, which would result in the release of more methane and CO2, which would raise the temperature further, which would cause the release of more CO2 and methane, etc. etc. in a giant runaway feedback loop.

This is one version of the "Runaway Greenhouse Effect" that so many scientists are terrified of. There is no way back once this starts. Temperature climbs exponentially, which means, the faster it goes, the faster it goes.

There are some simulations that suggest that unless something is done now to stop the increase in atmospheric CO2, there could be a runaway greenhouse effect starting in 2050.

The atmosphere is a terribly complex system and notoriously difficult to model accurately, but there's enough here to be concerned about.

So we either take steps now, or we gamble that the science is wrong.

Pollution is an issue, what I dont buy is the generalized 'chicken little' hysteria and bald manipulation. Much of it is END OF THE WORLD hype and lawyers-pols making a grab for our money.

There are plenty of great ideas, and all of them are ignored in favor of the money grab. Here in my town a company opened a taxi business featuring electric cars with a no charge fare in downtown. The taxi companies went apeshit and the mayor jerked their business license because of the complaints and the competition with the city's trolley. The trolley costs ONE MILLION PER BLOCK TO BUILD. The trolley rolls from the cruise ship dock to the gay bars, takes all day to do it, and loses its ass.

Again, to the naysayers, I go back to the numbers. There will always be one or two doubting scientists - it doesn't make them right. Real and actual measurements and extrapolations prove, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the entire output of the human race is inconsequential and not a factor in Climate change.

That is truth and it is not, 'inconvenient' at all; merely nature at work, ignoring man as it always does.

There is a philosophy behind the Global Warming fraud, a hateful Philosophy, rooted in Marxism, class struggle, rich against the poor, and the resources, land, and means of production all to be managed and controlled for social reasons.

Increasing the price of all the necessities of human life, food, shelter and security, is an inhumane disservice created by the restrictions and regulations placed on the enterprise of man to fulfill an arcane economic system that has displayed its' inhumanity wherever it has been imposed.

Hysteria and stubborn refusal to accept the slightest dissent to even the smallest point of GW ( or "Global Climate Change" as it's now called, after one too many demonstrations were nearly cancelled by blizzard conditions ) is what's holding back any progress.

So long as there are Envirovangelists like Gore screaming hellfire and damnation, there are going to be people on the other side doing the same. Between the two, they drown out anything rational.

Just like so many other political hot buttons, there are places where both sides can reach agreement and compromise, to the good of all. The prophets of coming doom refuse to accept small victories, though. It's all or nothing -- now or never -- and you'll all burn in the fires of hell if you don't accept the word of thy god Global Warming as your personal savior and empty your wallet into his collection plate.

The current strategy has become white noise, and utterly ineffective. As time continues to march on, and more of the dire, overblown "10 years or less" predictions fail to come true, it will lose even more steam, and lend credence to the dissenters on the other side -- even the whakko-loons.

Meanwhile, green energy continues to sputter along in its infancy, underfunded. Cleaner alternatives to current fossil fuel technology are lambasted as "not good enough!" and refused a hearing. Nuke plants are still radioactive to those who spent years railing against them, despite knowing full well that it's the only fully viable technology available right now to work toward weaning our lifestyle away from fossil fuels. The list goes on and on.

The all-encompassing boogie-man of Global Warming is part of the problem, not the solution.

The 'solution' is simple: Get the hell out of our way!

Petroleum, discovered in quantity in Pennsylvania, quickly made expensive and rare 'whale oil' obsolete in just a few years. Private enterprise.

The internal combustion engine, utilizing the product of petroleum, relegated real 'horse power' to the history books. Private enterprise.

The generation of electricity, electric motors, the motive power of technolgy instead of the backs of men, revolutionized the entire world within a few years. Private Enterprise.

The invention of the personal computer and before that the television and radio, all: Private enterprise.

The 'energy crisis' in the United States is artificial, brought about by restrictions and regulations that has forced the industry to import over 60% of all petroleum.

As with the aforementioned innovations in the history of man, need became the mother of invention and innovation, not government planning.

If you are sincere and if indeed you do have the best interest of all of mankind as your motivation, then get the hell out of the way and let free men have free reign to create, invent and innovate a replacement to fossil fuels, including Nuclear.

You see? It isn't complex at all. Individual human freedom is, was and always will be the pathway to the future.

While it is a fossil fuel, it isn't generally categorized as such by the media. When one says 'fossil fuels' the average person things of coal, oil, and natural gas.

The solution is simple. Stop trying to ram through impossible omnibus legislation, and attack the problems one at a time, starting with the places where there is the least resistance, and concentrating on the benefits to the opposing ideaology in the process ( reduced dependance on foreign oil, for example )

And stop bringing up the big, bad, scary monster of Global Warming. As soon as it's mentioned, it brings all the most violently debated parts straight to the surface, burying everything else.

It's the only way that any progress is going to happen. Every time a "comprehensive reform bill" hits for any issue, you know it's going exactly nowhere. All we're going to get out of that is government officials making asses of themselves and more of our tax dollars down the drain on a dead-end bill.

I agree Scot, but the funny thing is, whether global warming is caused by using fossil fuels or CFC's or any other man made substance, does matter. What really matters is the fact that the Earth is under a great stress to keep us alive and we need to do something about it or we die. Keep driving gas driven cars and using aerosols and everything else that's causing the problem, it isn't going to matter. What will matter is when you don't wake up, or anyone else for that matter, because we're all fucking dead. End of story. No air, no breath. no ozone, we fry. no clean water, nothing to drink.
