Texas Judge Says Gay Marriage Okay

I think same-sex marriage advocates wont rest until the issue goes to the US Supreme Court.

It reminds me of Dred Scott. Abolitionists pushed Dred Scott into the Supreme Court where the final decision revoked citizenship for all blacks and made slavery legal everywhere. Then the abolitionists provoked a civil war, and even the war didnt end slavery. In the end the Republicans locked Democrats out of the Capitol and passed the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments.

There is an historical stupidity, deliberately promulgated by the religious establishment. All references to marriage in the Torah, Bible, Quaran, whatever, are to appease secular property law and the inheritance considerations of the time and curry favor with the secular authorities.

Any pretense that this is more than Neanderthal ignorance has been blown away by DNA science and it is incredible that any semi-intelligent person could still have belief in it. But I guess a proud country like ours that won't permit a world-class film like "Creation"(about Darwin - and he's so cute) to get a distributor in the US is prepared to retreat to its mountain caves and throw rocks at anyone who doesn't conform.

It is time that secular governments, all over the world, asserted themselves strongly and refused to have anything to do with the misogynistic and homophobic rants of those that drag their knuckles on the sidewalk.

My gripe goes further than most. Yes, gay and lesbian marriages should be welcomed and cheered. But why not marriages between unmarried sisters (or brothers) to gain the legal advantages and, perhaps, adopt children in need.

Why didnt gays & lesbians assert their human rights a few million years ago? There had to be a first marriage. It was the perfect time to yell, HOLD ON! My guess is you'd be fed to the dogs if you had. And thats not a bad option even now.

This will definitely be an interesting case, as Texas has some of the lowest support for Gay Marriage in the US. In 2005 76% voted to ban both same sex marriage and civil unions in Texas, one of the strongest anti-gay popular votes to date.

By 538 politics model, opposition to gay marriage erodes by approximately 1.9% per year. By that model, it would take more than 2 decades for popular support to sway in favor of gay marriage, which will be long after "purple" states like Montana and Colorado have granted some recognition to same sex couples.

Still, this ruling will likely be overturned on some technical legal point. The more moderate Supreme court justices are unlikely to want to make any sort of sweeping precedent in either direction at this point in time. Legalizing gay marriage everywhere could be quite disruptive to the country today, but establishing a precedent that would look foolish 10 years from now also isn't very advisable.

Marriage is a secular institution that establishes next-of-kin, inheritance rights and divorce entitlements - a far cry from any truly religious concept. Did Eve wear a wedding band (which any way marks ownership being transferred from father to husband)?

We probably need to stop religions using the word 'marriage, and reserve the term for the wider democratic base. I would propose 'unthinking union' as an appropriate title for any woman who subjects herself to a coupling under judeo-christian teaching.

My home state is sadly full of people who believe I and my life-mate will go to hell for love, but W will not go to hell for wasting the lives of thousands of good soldiers and hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians by lying us into a war that had no legal basis and absolutely nothing to do with US interests.

It's an interesting footnote, but I doubt it will drag my state any farther into the modern era. I'm afraid just too many of my neighbors still believe woman's suffrage was a mistake. Never mind civil rights.

The Republicans claim this is what they stand for, but they want the right to control the Middle East, marriage rights, reproductive rights and force religious ceremonies on everyone.

The Democrats claim this, but they want to control Health Care, Employment and the general use of language and culture.

Neither party actually believes in freedom anymore. They only want the freedom to control those they don't like. In the case of the Republicans controlling Texas, they mean me.
