Curious about submission process

I've submitted a story to Lit, and it is sitting there 'pending'. I'm curious about a couple of things.

1) In order to have my italics, I had to use RTF format. Is it possible to instead use Text and just use bulletin board code for this? Even if it is just as editor marks and prints out as a bracketed I ? Can the editors then convert it back to italics later? It really would be nice to be able to view the story immediately and make sure everything is okay, instead of waiting for manual conversion.

2) How long does it take for somebody to get around to a new story these days? Anyone submitted something recently?

Bulletin Board code doesn't match up. You need HTML, which is similar, but different. It uses arrows instead. <i>, <b>, <u> and so on.

Well... first of all, convert your story to TEXT then you can paste it directly to the submission form. If you need formating like bold or itallics or size or font etc you need to use the HTML codes for those. For instance Bold is <B> with less than and greater than signs, not brackets.

Secondly you asked THE QUEStion. Unfortunately, MathGirl isn't here to answer you so, I, her humble servant and student, will do my best of answer you.

1) Generally it takes 3 to 5 days for a submission to post, assuming it's not rejected for grammar or stupidity. However...
2) In times when there is a contest running as there is now the posting time is stretched out to 5-8 days.
3) But here is the problem: You asked THE QUESTION. This puts you into a third catorgory. Now you need to do a few extra things to be posted.
a) Your story will be sent to the QUESTION Review board where it will languish for 5 - 7 weeks.
b) After the board provisionally approves your story you will receive an email directing you to provide additional informations such as, copy of your drivers license, a certified Bond against asking the question ever again (available at most reputable insurance companies, especially AIG), your last 10 years Income Tax Returns, A certified letter from a licensed psychiatrist stating that your momentary insantity in asking THE QUESTION will never happen again, a full disclosure and background search including court cases and credit history, a clear, 8X10 framed photo of your dog and possibly other such important information in evaluating your story.
4) Upon sucessful receipt of the requested items and evaluation of you, your history, your story etc, your story will be place in the "Special" QUESTION que for posting. Right now the estimate is sometime in February, 2081.

Thank you for the question :)

using ms word <i>gets you italics</i> and <b>gets you bold</b> and so on like that

Did you explain to her about 'N'?

2) How long does it take for somebody to get around to a new story these days? Anyone submitted something recently?

I've posted a few things recently. Most took about three days to go up - which is in the region of the advertised 72 hours, of course. My most recent effort took four days, but the third day was a Sunday, and they don't seem to post many stories then.

I had one problem. There was an objection to a fake url I'd included in a story (in the mistaken impression it would give it verisimilitude). I had to remove it before the story was posted. Apparently urls and web addresses aren't allowed. I think the rejection came through in about three days, then it took another two, if I remember rightly, for the corrected story to be posted.

On the whole, I think the system's reasonably swift. I'm curious, though. Do the moderators actually read all this stuff right through, or is the text scanned somehow for trigger no-no words?

From a post by Laurel not too long ago, I get the impression she reads it all. Talk about speed reading.

Laurel reads the story right through. I know she does, because she'll reject my submission for spelling errors and I find it, one, on the second last, or last page. That's picky to me, but I guess she wants my story to read as well as it was written. She must be a speed reader or she really, really likes porn stories. I think the average time is 3-4 days after submission before my story is posted, barring rejects.

Thank you for the question :)

Hmmmmm..... I know I would have deserved that had I directed the question to the people responsible for reading accepting rejecting etc.... but when I directed to any author who recently submitted, to know what their experience was? Kinda harsh....

Anyhow, thanks everyone!

Also, I think I shall go find the appropriate suggestions box to say, "Hey, the thing about using HTML code to insert italics or bold into your text file submission? You don't mention that in the FAQ!" (it says 'if you need italics or bold, you must submit in .doc or .rtf')

A lot of the FAQs and informational blurbs are outdated/unclear. If you find something like that, and can suggest something that makes it a little easier to understand/update it, send it in a PM to Laurel.

I've done that with a couple of things, and with the suggestion ready in hand, it's usually changed the next day or so. With trying to code new features and keep up with posting stories, some of the old nuts-and-bolts of the site are bound to get second priority. A little help from us will go a long way :)
