Tufts University: No sex in room while roommate is present

(CNN) -- A new policy at Tufts University prohibits students in dorms from having sex while their roommate is in the room, according to the university's 2009-2010 student handbook.

The Massachusetts university's formal rule also bars so-called "sexiling" -- exiling a roommate from the room so the other roommate can engage in sexual activity.

The new policy "is really about consideration and respect for others and the need for students to be mindful of their roommates' need for privacy, study and sleep," university spokeswoman Kim Thurler told CNN.

She said while she did not have an exact number of complaints from students about their roommates' behavior, "over the last few years, the Office of Residential Life and Learning received approximately a dozen expressions of concern about this issue."

Callie Morton, a freshman at Tufts, told CNN affiliate WHDH-TV, "If someone is going to go and have sex while their roommate is in the room, I mean I think that's kind of gross. I think it's kind of funny that they would have to make a rule about it."

The story goes on. What I find funny is -

(a) The University actually made a rule about this

(b) The University actually believes the students are too stupid to find a way around it. If caught what is the University really going to do about it? Suspend the offenders for sex?

and

(c) Does this mean if your roommate is fucking someone in another location you can have an audience or an orgy in your own room?

I think the answer is simply to go next door. The people who live there aren't roommates. Jackpot.

Actually, I don't think this rule was well thought out when it was made. And how do they intend to police it? The Tufts University Sex Police?

Texting is big, so the one boinking should text the other and give a time to come back. If it's a biology test coming, the roomie could just say she was studying.

As I see it, the burning question is: if this is my bedroom, and some fucking is going on, do I want to be:

1. Somewhere else?

That's what they mean by "sexiling." Asking your roommate to leave, telling them they shouldn't come back till a certain time, or putting some kind of notice (hat, scarf, used napkin from McDonald's) on the door letting them know you're "busy."

I think that kind of a rule is silly. Roommates need to work that kind of thing out between themselves.
