Woo, I just got my first 'Hot!'

I know I shouldn't be excited, but I am... I really am... :D

I was exited at my first H too. What I can't figure out is how you get an E.

Fast

E signifies a Editors Choice award,

The EC is a relatively rare award; only one work in 200 earns it, compared to roughly one in three that is Hot.

Why are there considerable differences between the categories? Perhaps editors favor certain categories. Perhaps some categories have numbers of editors that are out of proportion to the number of submissions. Perhaps some categories lend themselves to the qualities of writing favored by editors. Or perhaps the best writers gravitate to certain categories. The numbers give no answer.

A question that can be better addressed is: Do the criteria that editors use to award the EC match the criteria used by Literotica readers to determine their votes? If editors and readers use the same criteria, we should expect almost all ECs to also be voted Hot. This turns out not to be the case. Summing across all the categories, only 46% of ECs were also Hot.

The Literotica FAQ suggests that ECs are awarded only on the basis of personal likes. Given the fact that less than half of all ECs are also Hot, it's evident that editors' personal likes differ somewhat from those of readers. Therefore if you're aiming to capture one of these awards for yourself, you should read many past winners to discern what qualities the editors favor.

(Thanks to OwlWhisperer for the facts)

That's why I am going to write the most awesome editor anal-gangbang story ever! I'll get that
E yet, oh yes, I will.

Congrats! They're still fun.

Unfortunately for me, someone voted a 1 or 2 on my new masterpiece and sank it below the 4.5. Hopefully, it will recover.

Congrats, Amber, but you should be warned: There are some assholes that might read your post and say something like: "Oh, yeah! Well, let's just see about that," and go and drop a one-bomb just out of meanness.

I have been wondering about this. Do you think other writers are bombing the stories here with bad feedback?

I'm not sure that there is more than one submissions editor on the site. Laurel? And at the most some part time help?

It's hard for an E story to go/maintain hot because a lot of readers read the story in a cynical or "yeah, you think so?" mode.

My own experience is that the E story just hits the editor on a given day. Most of the Es I've gotten aren't what I would consider to be my best work technically.

You aren't the first person to wonder about this. There is no concrete proof, but stories (including mine) have gained and lost H's several times in both contests and regular postings. One could chalk it up to whims of the readers or to outright sabotage, human nature being what it is.

Congrats on your first H. :D

I would be unwilling to accuse any specific individual, but I do believe that happens, but not very often.

Congrats on your first H. :D

This is a PM that appeared on an entry of mine in the Nude Day Contest:

Just terrible

Oh, gees, another monologue. Don't you know how to write dialogue, Box? WTF! Too much black space and not enough white space. Boring! You need dialogue to move the story and not excess narative (yawn). I really wanted to give you a lower score, but they don't have minus scores. Besides, the score will be erased, along with this comment, no doubt

I think it's another writer because he or she addressed me as "Box." As a matter of fact, there was little dialogue because it was a description of a woman stripping on a nude site, and the reactions of a man watching it. There was no dialogue because all he did was watch her and wish he could be getting it on with her.

Congrats Amber. You have every right to get excited. I think I have over 100+ H's and always get a twinge of happiness when I get another. You Go Girl!:D

Congratulations, Amber, and welcome to loony land. :p

Red H's are cool. Blue Ws are even better. :D

That's true, but a W is always going to be an H unless trolls take special delight in bombing it.

Which they do, trust me. :p I must have gotten a good fifty bombs after Halloween '07

The monthly contest and Reader's Choice wins aren't attacked so viciously, though.

To be honest, I was thinking of the Readers' Choice winners. I have two, both from 2007, and those scores havn't changed much since they were announced as winners. Theme contest winners are still current, and there is more said about them than about the RC winners.

Yeah, the RC and monthly contest winners aren't announced on the main page. It's sort of a "slip under the door prize" as opposed to a press conference. ;)

It's hard for an E story to go/maintain hot because a lot of readers read the story in a cynical or "yeah, you think so?" mode.

I think having any flag on a story tends to reduce the score because of that "what were they thinking to flag this" reaction when the story doesn't live up to raised expectations.

Thanks for all the replies :D

I just checked... and it's still there, so it hasn't been bombed. Woo!

Just reading through the thread - why would anyone intentionally write bad comments, publically or privately, and why would they mark the score down on purpose? Maybe this is me being naive, but I couldn't bring myself to slam anyone else's work, no matter how bad it is.

I had a really mean public comment on a new story I submitted this week in Erotic Couplings - my natural genre is BDSM and I was told to "fuck off back to that category" as my writing was just "nasty." This doesn't bother me so much, but the effort it must take for some of these comments, it makes you wonder if these people have nothing better to do with their time.

Anyhoo... big hugs to all who offered congrats, I don't feel like such a rookie now that I know others still get excited after hundreds of H's.

Why do they do it. Because they are just mean. Apparently they have nothing better to do with their time. They thrive on putting others down to make themselves feel more important.

Because they're trolls and unable to write themselves so have no respect or appreciation to the effort it takes to write a decent story.

Others one-bomb stories because they don't like how it turns out, or the husband/wife did/didn't get punished for their infidelity/loyalty - happens in Loving Wives all the time.

Congrats on the red H! :rose: It is very cool.

A lot of green E's have red H's, more do than don't. Most that have both that I've read have deserved both their E and H. If you want both, it seems that the stories are usually fairly unique within the tradition of the genre, and beautifully crafted. Do not write something goofy taking creative license in second person/present tense. Some people will truly hate it. And you will languish in the low 4's.
