No more therapy to make gays straight

NEW YORK (AP) - The American Psychological Association declared Wednesday that mental health professionals should not tell gay clients they can become straight through therapy or other treatments.
Huh, they actually condoned that kind of quackery up until now?

I've known a few gay Baptists who are seriously screwed up because of RELIGION.

But I don't think real world psychologists have supported gay-to-straight therapy for a looong time. The APA statement does seem late in coming, though.

Better late than never APA. :D

Personally, I wouldn't want to follow any religion that condemned my lifestyle.

Considering how many denominations have active gay/lesbian ministries, hanging onto one's fundie-ism seems such a waste of a perfectly good life. And the APA has historically been a day late and a dollar short.

Though I must admit that they published a great manual of style.

Why was the APA governing council meeting in Toronto? Just asking.

Indeed. I work with three gay men, and they're all going to therapy for various (non-sexuality) reasons. They've never given me the impression their shrink was trying to turn them straight.

The APA ruling is just a formality, a way of announcing to the world that they've seen the light.

Judging from the article, there are some who still persist. That makes the official statement necessary, I guess.

The guidelines sound good, though. Finally they dispose with the idea of 'curing', but they also don't fall in the trap of establishing some other one-size-for-all standard. They've been careful to emphasize the approach tailored to a client's needs, as they should.

Liar, to answer your incredulous question...........

Gays can turn straight, IF THEY TRY HARD ENOUGH

Turning gay people straight ??

Going straight

One in six psychiatrists has tried to turn gays straight

These are just one or two headlines from a quick google. There are loads more. Try your local christian book shop, you'll find so many books about 'how I turned straight', or how 'we can turn you straight'.

Pisses me off. Big Time. The arrogance.

Gays don't need turning straight.
Straights just need to accept that we are here and have a right to be here.

Yes yes, a lot of yahoos believe it and do it. (A lot of people believe in dianetics too.) But for a major official national organisation of mental health professionals to support it, even silently, up until 2009, is ridiculous. Do they support excorcism too? It's just as scientifically sound.
