For me the article starts off with this great Harvard citizen was arrested by this lowly police officer, of course that depends on which account of events you believe. (It was a bit snarky)

I do not know how many here have ever responded to an incident of any kind. That being said this officer was informed only that there was someone at this location attempting to break into the home. From the 911 call in the suspect was described as a black male. Upon arrival your adrenalin is through the roof and you have no idea what you are going walk into. One you would approach with caution. If you knock and no one is running you over to get away but they come to the door the first thing that you should do, would be to ask them to step outside. Reasoning why, walk into your front door close it and look around what can you see. How many things are within your reach that you could clobber a man/woman with, how close to a kitchen is your entrance, how fast can you get a knife, gun, or other type of weapon. Now step back out your front door and look upon your front porch, what items are there? In the mind of an officer where would you feel safer? Outside reason why... they know what is there no surprises. They would also have the availability of witnesses on the street should something come up.
In the article it indicates that he was leaving the premises and that would have been the end of it.

The cop did his job, he responded to the call, he ensured that the person who was in the house was who they said they were upon which it became a non issue and he was leaving. If he did follow behind him yelling those things then I am sorry, he was causing a disturbance and he was yelling at an officer of the law. If he was not able to control himself enough to quit yelling at the officer then they are supposed to arrest you and take you in.

I have been to calls that were the funniest thing you will ever see to the worst that you could imagine. Everyone was different and everyone I ever dealt with was treated with respect...except maybe the man who was cheating on his wife... after I talked her out of a window he showed up at the hospital with lipstick stains on his shirt.

My whole point with any of this is you have to treat everyone equally... if it is not okay to hang candidate x because you don’t like him then it should not be okay to hang candidate y just because you don’t like her. One is a hate crime while the other is a joke.

Somewhere along this great path of existence we have all lost what it means to treat someone other then ourselves with respect.

As I've said, I believe Gates was wrongfully arrested. For this reason, I agree with you that Crowley should apologize.

I've read the Gates thing. Got it. He had to jimmy the door of his own house, and a neighbor called the cops - as they should have if they saw someone breaking into a neighbor's home. The police responded as they should have to a report of suspicious home entry.

This whole thing would have been a non-issue if everyone involved had treated it like a routine check of a suspicious home entry instead of assuming racism.

Cop show ups, asks the person who answers the door to step out on the porch, they do, they present their ID when requested, if anyone else is in the home they cooperate with the police, thank you officer/thank you Joe citizen, no escalation, buh bye.

My kids are of mixed heritage (part white, part Hispanic). If my 15 year old son was seen jimmying a door, and a neighbor called the cops out of concern for my safety/property, and he threw a temper tantrum instead of cooperating exactly as I outlined above? I'd expect him to end up in cuffs and told to calm the **** down. And I would let his ass sit at the precinct for a few hours until he did.

I'm sorry Dr. Gates was inconvenienced. I'm sorry Dr. Gates felt threatened and embarrassed. however, IMO, his behavior contributed to the situation, and people are looking for a racist incident which does not exist...

If Officer Crowley has taught classes on racial profiling, then he must be fully aware of what that entails, how widespread it is, and why individual officers need to be taught not to do it. He should also, therefore, be aware of why this is a sensitive and highly charged issue for African Americans.

His failure to acknowledge, then and now, why the professor had reason to suspect racial profiling - even if Crowley himself was innocent - contributed to the situation.

As I've already said, I agree that the professor's failure to respond respectfully to the officer contributed to the situation as well.

Both bear some responsibility for the escalation of the incident, but in the end it was Gates who was *unlawfully* arrested. What you expect of your child, CM, is not relevant to the law in Massachusetts.

My best friend is black and, despite the fact that we come from a fairly tolerant part of the world, I've witnessed people being both openly and covertly racist toward her. I wouldn't say it happens every day but it happens enough that her sensitivity to it is justified, in my opinion.

There have been a few times she's cried wolf but there have been an equal number of times when events, on the surface, have seemed race-neutral only to be revealed, down the road, as deliberately discriminatory. So, without knowing all the details of the Crowley incident, (I'm already over my bandwidth limit for this month, ack), I understand why he probably overreacted.

And of course, the press, they love a good bit of racial drama.

I live in place where I am the visible minority on all fronts - white, female, don't speak the language - I understand the anger and the need to vent. I do. I just choose to keep my inflammatory expressions of frustration, (that I don't really, ever mean), between myself and those who know me and who won't be offended.

Still, Samuelx, if my proud, black friend ever heard someone "blowing off steam" about white people, using the language you have in this thread, in my presence, she'd tear a strip off them, regardless of the colour of their skin. Just saying.
