Your Tax Dollars at Work: Supporting Michelle Obama in the Manner

The figures are in. As required by Congress since 1995, salaries paid to staffers employed in the West Wing of the White House must be publicly reported. Most of you won't be pleased to learn that your tax dollars are paying $1,448,500 annually to provide the First Lady, Michelle Obama, with the staff she feels she needs to execute her duties as FLOTUS.

For purposes of comparison, please consult Dan Froomkin's 2004 White House Staff List-By Salary published in the Washington Post on June 13, 2004. Tallying Laura Bush's staff from the list provided by Froomkin totals $561,325 in annual salaries for the former First Lady's staff.

This number does not include White House maintenance or kitchen staff or the occasional pizza night with Barack and Michelle flying in the chef from a St. Louis restaurant to kick back and share some deep dish with 140 of their close personal friends. Nor does it include date nights in Chicago.

And it certainly doesn't include Michelle's European vacation with her daughters. In fact, CNS reports that

"the White House will not reveal the cost to taxpayers of the European vacation that first lady Michelle Obama and the president's two daughters, Malia and Sasha, took last month."

Despite deploying multiple aircraft, a huge staff and a motorcade of 20 vehicles including support staff on tours of London and Paris and la-di-da, apparently the White House feels there is some sort of executive privilege involved in withholding the cost of the First Family's extravagances from the citizens who foot the bill for them.

Perhaps they thought we wouldn't notice?

"It was supposed to be a secret trip, but the motorcade gave it away." (ibid)

Why compared 2009 to 2004? Why not provide the combined salaries of the former First Lady's staff in the last year of Bush's presidency?

Maybe because he has the numbers? Or were you thinking that the last years of the Bush presidency saw a major runup in staff salaries?

Using data to make comparisons? What WAS I thinking?

Sorry, from now on I'll follow your lead, and suggest that we ignore comparisons where data exists, in the hope that unavailable data will somehow change a result that we don't like.

Publicly reported isn't the same thing as including the information needed to make an apples to apples comparison between the two lists.

Or...if it's so easy, you do it, rather than sitting there and throwing out irrelevant chaff.

The staff salaries are proxy for the notion that Michelle is a selfish and arrogant individual, using public service as an excuse to surround herself with everything she wants at the expense of others.

So 'unavailable' that I found it via Google. Can I find you two brain cells to rub together?

Schmuck.

I just did.

Thanks for the laugh on the 'publicly available' and 'apples-to-apples'. You really ought to think for yourself from time to time instead of parroting others.

where is the 18% taken from?

I think you made this stuff up, I dont see it from the link?

Step 1: Click on link I provided. Note that the article displayed in the new page is titled 2008 White House Office Staff List - Salary .

Step 2: Use CTRL-F to find all 'Lady' listings. Take your calculator and add up each. At the end of the page, you'll have a total of $1,225,400.00

Step 3: If you can't figure out the rest from there, BB, I'm going to shove a BAM bobblehead up your ass.

Thanks for shooting yourself in the foot for me.

My point was that there are many numbers available, and if you don't correctly relate them, you get a conclusion of unknown value. For example, this public list for 2009 says that that the number for Michelle's team are understated in the OP by about $100,000.

Then how do you know that the 2004 number is accurate, and not much closer to the 7/09 figures you just dug up?
