This is a question about the National Health Service in the UK. Would they cover hormone treatments and counseling and similar similar treatments for a transexual? I would expect so, but what about gender reassignment surgery? I would have my doubts about that, because it is more cosmetic in nature than functional. I would like to know because of my ongoing character, Angel Jones, and I wonder what she will do next.

I think that the NHS would have difficulty funding operations to change a person's apparent sex unless there was some other condition present such as inability to urinate.

However they would fund psychiatric counselling and support for someone who had difficulty in accepting their apparent sex.

Most "sex-change" operations in the UK have to be paid for privately.

On the news of late, waiting periods in Britain and Canada for breast cancer mammograms and treatment and, 'rationing' of all health services for those over 60 years of age.

Strangely enough, or not, they get treatment in America with no waiting period.

Box, my OH had her gender reassignment surgery done on the NHS. Funding is available if you're willing to jump through enough flaming hoops. There's usually something like a two year waiting list though, which is why many choose to have their surgery done privately. Also, you don't necessarily get to pick the surgeon you want if you have an NHS operation - another reason to go private.

Hormones are also provided via NHS prescription - that doesn't mean they're free but there's a flat fee per item. However, there's no NHS funding for facial hair removal - you have to pay for electrolysis or laser hair removal yourself.

No, but you can apply to have a gender recognition certificate to register the change officially. All public bodies will then honour the change in gender.

We haven't bothered to get my OH's certificate though as we'd have to get divorced in order to do so.
