Doesn't anyone remember he was pretty ruthless?

Doesn't anyone remember that he is directly responsible for 100's of thousands of deaths during the 80's?

So he's the lesser of two evils.

As was Saddam Hussein after the Iranian revolution of 1979, and we supported him cuz he was against Iran.

Let's not kid ourselves...whats happening in Iran is not about "freedom"...

60% of Irans population is under the age of 30.

Yanno why?

Cuz Mousavi had young men and boys "ordered" to their deaths in the war Iraq/Iran war.

And now he's a saint?

Give me a break.

I'm hoping that the people of Iran WILL be successful. But until they throw off the yoke of the "Supreme Leader"...they will never know FREEDOM.

I agree with Obama on this...stay out of it. Hell, even stayin out of it...we are still "meddling"....yeah...right.

I don't give a damn who winds up in charge...like you say it's Hobson's Choice...I wanna know who's in control of whatever nukes they have. With this degree of governmental instability, anything can happen. Unless the protesters get some weapons or the Army on their side, they're gonna go down swinging, but they will go down.

We had the same choices in Iraq. Yes, it's the lesser of evils (for now--American policy isn't all that farsighted). That's precisely why we didn't have Saddam knocked off. The regional mind-set is lots of degress off of the American one. If we found a saint, he/she certainly wouldn't be seen as one in her/his own country.

The main problem is a bunch of old men who won't relenquish power. These so called "Clerics" are all about power and nothing about their Religion (unless it involves middle ages treatment of women).

Sounds like the Vatican.

Meet the Republicans.

Who says he's a saint?

They are both in bed with the current power elite in Iran, the Ayatollahs in general and the Supreme Leader in particular. Mousavi seems a bit more realpolitik sensible than the incumbent though. Less incindeary rethoric, less dependant on populist reactionaries and more conciliatory re. foreign policy, and finally slightly more in favor of social reform. Better than Ahmadinejad? Hell yes. The best possible choice? That's another issue.

What most people are supporting is free and fair elections in Iran. Even if they choose between Giant Douche and Turd Sandwich. And right to dissent without being arrested, beaten and shot.

Neither choice makes a bit of difference to us, but a successful protest does. The general population of Iran are rather pro-Western and would like to shake off the Supreme Leader and the clerics from controlling everything. A victory for the People could go a long way toward that end, thereby going along way to normalizing relations with the West.

With any luck it will be 1979 all over again and the Ayatollahs will get tossed.

Not sure about over there where you're at, but over here there are some news reports that are making him out to be the leader of the freedom movement.

It's sad.

Yes, well, Americans seem to demand to have a white hat to support--and if they are all charcoal gray or worse, they'll pretend one of them is white.
