Daddy is fine, he drives to work 99% of the time. the freaky thing is that 1% when he takes the metro, he takes the red line and could have been on one of those two trains. !

the local news has been covering this non-stop since it happened. still no clear number on how many dead or how many injured, but i do think they finally got everyone physically out of the trains (some were stuck).

I'm fine, thanks everyone for the concern! If I did take metro to work I'd be on unaffected parts of the system, but like osg's Daddy I drive 99% of the time. I have some friends who are also red line riders and they're fine too.

It's a really horrific accident, 9 dead and over 75 injured (including 2 responders). This is the worst accident in the nearly 35 years Metrorail has been in existence. Almost all the injured have been released and/or downgraded from critical condition. We haven't had a fatal accident on Metro since 1982. (People jumping onto the tracks happens about once a year though.)

Final death toll seems to be 9. The train was in automatic mode, and the emergency brake was engaged. They are sending the operator's blood for toxicology and checking her cell phone and text records. The first train stopped because there was already a train at the next platform; the fact that the train was in automatic mode seems to indicate (to me) that signals failed. The question about the operator remains if she could have hit the brake sooner, I guess; she wasn't actually driving. The track is not straight where the accident occurred, it has a slight curve there. Such a horrible tragedy.
