As part of Toronto’s 29th Annual Pride Week celebration, the LGBTTIQQ2S communities, families and friends will unveil this year’s Pride Parade on Sunday June 28th at 2 pm. It will shine with all colours of the rainbow and showcase the wonders of our heritage as one community.

LGBTTIQQ2S ??

So I'm told this means: "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgendered, Intersexual, Queer, Questioning, 2-Spirited". Don't ask me what "2-spirited" is or how some of these differ from others. Seriously, at what point does this attempt to be as inclusive as possible become parody. Where's The Onion when it's needed?

How about just stick with LGandEE? - Lesbian, Gay and Everyone Else.

Sam

I've discussed this with perfessers and prayed about it on my knees beside my bed. The consensus is: parody starts when the person flings open the closet door, wearing Rainbow Warrior Underoos and matching hot-pants.

You are confusing a newspaper reporter's words with real people, Sammy dear.

Two things;
There is strength in numbers, so it's to our benefit to include as many othered groups as we can find-- and it's pretty fucking easy, too, to find groups that have been treated like shit by the straight majority.

You don't get to define anything. It's not your problem.

(Two-Spirits is a native American term, by the way, of which there are plenty in Toronto.)

2-spirited is a Native Indian phrase for many mixed gender roles. What I LOVE about Toronto is the pride and acceptance of all sexualities from all walks of life every day of the year. This is probably why Pride Toronto is one of the biggest events of the year and why I miss being there at this time. PRIDE! PAR-TAY :nana:

This. Someone who was two-spirited was considered holy, as they were able to see things from both sides. They were loved by the gods to be gifted in this way.

It's too bad that this nation was overrun by a more primitive people, or they would still be looked upon as favored. :)

Why? Does being inclusive offend you in some way?

It almost sounds like you'd prefer for it to be Lesbian, Gay AGAINST Everyone Else.

Sorry, dude, but like Stella said there are too many other people who have been fucked over and as VM and the others have said there are too many straight people who believe in equality, as well. :rose:

As I posted on an earlier thread, when the day comes that, in a conversation between two straight white males, a third person is said to be any of the categories in LGBTTIQQ2S and the response is "And . . . ?", then the whole thing will quietly fade away, just like Kwanzaa has and for the same reasons. I'm waiting . . . http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii177/1volupturary_manque/DirtDOG.gif

I agree with the opinion expressed, but why single out two white males? Couldn't it just as well be two straight persons of any race or ethnicity and gender?

Yeah SB, but the list of all the categories of people who have been fucked over one way or the other, could easily be ten pages long.

And at some point an acronym just becomes weird lengthy string of characters. As a rethorical decive, it loses it's bouyancy after a while.

If it's really inclusiveness that is sought, wouldn't it be wiser to just present an idea, and let anyone who feel included be included?

Personally, I'd like to think of myself as a part of the OTHCP (Opposition To Hetero-Centric Prejudice) community. We have gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders, straight-as-an-arrow folks, identity-seekers and celibate asexuals, among many others, inside this tent.

Seems to me that there are too many who don't believe in equality too.

Can't we just say Queer? I thought that was the catch-all term for non-heteronormative categories.

Only queers can say 'queer.' ;)

Actually, according to the article in today's L.A. Times, I guess it should be specifically two straight persons who happen to be either African-American or Hispanic, those being the two groups most adamantly opposed to gay marriage.

The Hispanic split is 45%/46% not quite as 'adamant' as all that...

Women and the educated are more likely to support gay marriage all across the board.

As a person who lives there, I concur. It's a fabulous event, but also a reminder that we are more fortunate than many others who are not free to be themselves.

And those under 65, not counting my 87-year-old mother who also favors it. That's why time is on our side, in spite of the lessoning influence of white voters.

Edmonton's Pride Parade turned out to be more political than celebratory, which is nice. Still can't elieve Heather Klimchuk, one who voted for Bill 44, had the audacity to step up on the stage at the Pride Parade thinking she could earn political brownie points for doing such. She was promptly booed off the stage without her being able to say a word to the crowd.

Behavior like Heather's obviates the necessity of the non-normatives to group themselves.

Yup. It's self-defense, after all. The Alliance needs to learn from the NRA how to intimidate Congress. Surely there are more than four million non-normatives out there and that's all the members the NRA has. But do we write letters? Man!
