It seems that old saying no good deed goes unpunished is true.
Driving home from work today we saw a small car pulled over in the left turn lane and blocking traffic. I pulled over and walked up to the car while waving traffic around us. When I reached the little thing, (A Mazda Miata) I found it held two people. An older couple. I asked what the problem was even as I kept waving cars around us. The driver told me the engine had just quit. I had him open the hood and took a look under there. Oh my, this car wasn’t going anywhere under it’s own power. From the looks of it the engine had seized. I told the guy to hang on a minute then ran back to my car with my wife in it.
I asked my wife to move the car over so it was behind the other car and then follow me as I pushed it to the other side of the intersection and a parking lot there. I told the old guy driving the Miata to put it in neutral and steer it to the parking lot as I pushed him over there. He agreed.
When the light changed off we went. Me pushing the Miata, (thank god it was a Miata) and my wife following fairly close behind with the four way’s flashing. WE had just started this when our little parade was joined by a cruiser. When the cop inside saw me pushing the car he pulled in behind and hit his lights as well. Now this was an escort. We were really moving along. I was almost running as I pushed this little Beer Can on wheels. Oh I was sweating but that’s nothing new in Florida. We were almost all the way through the left turn and the driver was eyeing the right turn we were going to be making when I heard the sound of tires chirping on pavement.
I looked behind me in time to watch a car pass the cruiser and my wife on the right then pull into the lane I was in. Oh shitski the car pulled into the small space between my wife and the car I was pushing. There wasn’t room for the car and me in that same space. I didn’t hesitate and I’m thankful I didn’t. I jumped up onto the trunk lid of the car I was pushing as this other car bumped the rear of the car, slid through with a screech and pulled back into traffic with the intention of keeping on going. I slid off the trunk lid and started pushing again as I watched the cruiser whip around my wife and go after the other car.
When we got into the parking lot the driver of the car put it in gear and hopped out to see if I was okay. My wife pulled in behind us and did the same thing as I stood there checking myself over for damage. A couple of bruises was the limit of the damage to me. (That and the fact that my heart was trying to break some records.) The Miata had a nice scrape in the rear bumper.
We got the car into a parking space and I loaned the old guy my phone so he could call Triple A for a tow. While he was doing this the cop came back to check on us. He told us he had easily caught the car and pulled it over. The driver was a 15 year old out for a joy ride in her Mommies car.
My wife and I hung around with the older couple until Triple A showed up to tow their car. (We had them sit in our car with the A/C on.)
