A few years ago I had some issues with Irregular periods.

I had several tests, including an intrauterine biopsy. (Ouch!)

I then went to a new gyno that said I was in perimenopause (and stress wasn't helping). She put me on progesterone for a few months which help ALOT.

But over the past year my period has started to get fucked up again. Irregular, light (or spotting), or nothin.

Well, over the last few weeks I have been in hell. And the last few days have been the worst.

Severe hot flashes followed by chills, night sweats, headaches, nausea, mood swings crying spells.....

Then a couple of days ago I occurred to me....it's not perimenopause any more...it's the real thing.

How long does this go on????

Sound like it also could be Mount Mist-suvius getting ready to erupt come August! ;)

I didn't go through it since I had a full hysterectomy at forty, so I can't offer any help but . . .

I'm with you. Menopause is hell. There's nothing funny about it all if you're one of those women who endure years of discomfort.

I also suffered the biopsy (ouch indeed), and as a result it was decided I needed a slow release progesterone coil, which was duly inserted (the biopsy ouch has nothing on this, believe me!). That was 3 1/2 years ago. I was told it has a life of 5 years and needs to stay there that long to make sure that what needs to happen, does happen. So my menopause is being pharmaceutically made to last longer than it really should have.

I sympathise with you completely, the hot flushes, the night sweats, mood swings....they make life almost intolerable at times. But we're just told, oh, it's natural it'll pass. Believe me, that does NOT help.

My suggestion would be go for another talk with your doctor, try and get some actual help out of him, there ARE drugs that are supposed to help with the hot flushes and night sweats which although they sound trivial, are completely the opposite. They are embarrassing, incredibly uncomfortable, and in many cases have a detrimental effect on relationships. There are also natural products you can get, take a long look around the internet. They may just help. Don't sit back and take it, hun, we don't have to any more. Get on someone's case and get some help to get your life back. Let me know how you get on.

Meanwhile, I have a letter to write to my gynaecologist......enuff's enuff.

When my gynecologist told me I'd only have to endure about 8-10 more years of that hell, I nearly reached down his throat and pulled his balls out his mouth. Then, I seriously considered scooping out my ovaries with a grapefruit spoon.

It wasn't until I told him, in all seriousness, "You end this-- or I will." that he finally scheduled that hysterectomy. Best damned thing I ever did. Hands down. I got my LIFE back.

:rose: Misty & all sufferers!

So...ummm...is biting off the head of a friend for the littlest offense common too?

Thirty years ago one of my staff, working in a remote office with all male colleagues, started having problems with her attendance. She would take a day or two off usually after a day when she was uncharacteristically short-tempered.

Her absence pattern was reported to me. I read the reports and asked one of the managers reporting to me, an older woman, to visit her and discuss her absences in confidence. After that discussion, the manager asked me, without revealing any details, to authorise a reference to our Occupational Health Service. I did.

The staff member had consulted her (male) doctor several times and had been told "It happens to women of your age. You'll get over it.".

The Occupational Health Service arranged for her to have private treatment at the employer's expense and facilitated her transfer to another local doctor who had a better understanding of "women's problems". Within a few weeks her attendance pattern improved.

When that staff member retired she sent me a letter thanking me for saving her sanity and her marriage.

How had I known? I had a large number of feisty elderly female relations who wouldn't put up with any chauvinist nonsense from their doctors.

Menopause: It's called that, because men better pause and think long and hard before saying anything that might be construed as unsympathetic or at all uncomplimentary. Therefore, I'm not going to say anything like that.

Actually, what I will say is that my current wife and the previous one both went through menopause while I knew them, and neither had any problem. I guess they were just lucky. Come to think of it, so was I. :)

Having also been on the receiving end of the short tempered, mood swinging, hot & cold sweating, hot flushed female, I can say this.
The HRT pills worked.
When the time came to terminate them, it was all over in a few months.
(not that those months were particularly amusing, mind).
