Boy 'too tall' for child's meal

A 10-year-old boy was refused a child's discounted meal at a Chinese restaurant in Gloucester because it said he was too tall.

Ben Gardner was measured by staff at the Angel Chef restaurant and told he was 9cm too tall at 149cm (4ft 11ins) and would have to pay full price.

"They classed him as an adult and I can't understand how they can do that," said his father, Gareth Gardner.

The restaurant said the height policy for children was introduced last year.

Mr Gardner said: "When we went into the restaurant we asked for a table for two adults and two children.

"After we finished we went up to pay and saw on the bill that they'd charged us for three adults and one child. When I disputed it, they showed us this height chart on the wall."

In a statement the Angel Chef told the BBC that the rules were clearly displayed in the restaurant.

Wow. I keep shrinking the way I am and I may be able to do the opposite, and demand a charge for a child's meal................

In my restaurant, we give the servers a certain amount of leeway when it comes to serving children's meals. Most of the time, I really don't care if someone wants a lighter meal and thus asks to order of the kid's list. We serve Italian food, mainly pasta and such, and therefore, the majority of our plates are well over a thousand calories. I can't fault a health-conscious person wanting a kid's meal, or an elderly patron wanting the same simply because they can't eat as much.

This is one of those situations in which the restaurant has to trust in the common sense of their patrons and servers. If I have a group of nine teenagers (such as I did the day before yesterday), all obviously over the cut-off age for our kid's meals (12), and they want to order off the kid's menu but gobble up the free bread loaf after loaf, uh-uh. Sorry, kids. Ain't happening. Besides, kid's meals are offered with the intent that an adult is with the party who will order off the regular menu.

Sounds to me like the restaurant owner got tired of the perception of being taken advantage of and enforced a ridiculous "height rule" as a means of solidifying his policy. He's being petty.

Hey, Grace! Have Misty take you to dinner there... YOU can order from the Kids Menu, at least! :D

If you're too short, do you have to order from the kid's menu? Why don't they just eyeball people when they come in, decide what they want, and serve it to them?

My name is Sue and I'll be evaluatin' your food preferences this evening.

Several years ago a girl came to school with a black eye. She said BUBBA DID IT. Bubba was her 3 year old brother. We went to the girl's house to see Bubba becuz we didnt believe her story. We assumed daddy did it.

Daddy was in jail, and eliminated as a suspect. Then we saw Bubba. This 3 year old was 5 feet tall and built like a wrestler. A huge kid! While we at the house Bubba had an issue with an older sibling and jerked the other kid off the sofa like he was a doll.

OK, let's get to the heart of the matter. If I stoop way down, can I get the child's menu prices?

What about somebody in a wheelchair? They would be under the limit. My first wife was very short because of a medical condition, even though she was in her forties. I wonder what she would have done.

I can easily see having a cutoff point, but it should be age, such as 12 years old, not height.

I was thinking the same thing. Does a full adult little person get kid's meal prices because they're under the height requirement?

Frankly, I think that people should just do away with kid's meals and have "small bites" meals. Good for kids or adults who want to eat less and/or pay less. You know you're still going to have hungry adults and kids who want the full sized meals (just don't give out so many loafs of free bread, right?).

And if you're going to do something like "Kids eat free" to lure in families, then have a low cut-off age. Like under seven.

The only thing I am curious about is why people are so fucking cheap. Seriously. We went on vacation recently and the hotel was fine for us. We paid a cheap price and got more service than expected. The hotel was not 5 star. It was 3 star hotel, which was perfect since the only time we ever saw the room was to sleep and shower. All I can say to the parents of this child is ... STOP BEING SO FUCKING CHEAP and just enjoy yourself so that your children learn to actually ENJOY themselves on vacation.

PS ... milk the shrinkage, Mat.:D

STOP BEING SO FUCKING CHEAP
Now, now, Charley, you can't compare their vacation to yours. Yours was two people right? And while I'm sure you're both plenty concerned about having a savings for your old age, that's not quite the same as having a savings to pass onto children and grandchildren. The fastest way to turn two well-off people who are easy (but not wasteful) about money into strict, penny-pinching economists is to give them kids. At that point, any cent that can be saved gets saved, if for nothing else than that it has to go into the kids' college funds. ;)

Yeah, yeah I get it. It does not make it right.

'Welcome to Celestial Foo Dog restaurant. Please refer all complaints to manager, Sum Ting Wong'. :D

That's just crazy. Height requirements in kids properly applies to rides and stuff. Not meals. Sheesh.

The idea is to get adults w/kids to come in NOT Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
