That means that full civil rights for gays and lesbians, including the right to marry, approaches one funeral at a time.

People who are against gay marriage often realize this fact, and it scares the piss out of them. It scares them that their sons and daughters, even those who hate taxes and will staunchly vote Republican, not only have no problem with homosexuality, but they have gay friends.

It's a much cited statistic, but I'll keep harping on it: If no one over 65 had voted on Prop 8, it never would have passed. People under 40 support gay marriage by a significant majority.

The wonderful thing about the US court system is it is not beholden to the popular will of the people, and can consider the rule of law and be forward thinking. The courts "forced" civil rights for ethnic minorities onto the people long before it was popular, but these days few people would argue against letting black people vote. Despite our wonderful court system, when it comes to the rights of homosexuals, the US sadly lags far behind most of the westernized world. Change is coming, but for the sake of those who may not have 15-20 years to wait, I truly hope it arrives very very soon.
