Obama's proposed mileage standards will kill more Americans than the War in Iraq.

The Obama administration’s proposed mileage standards that will be announced today may kill more Americans at a faster rate than the Iraq War — his signature issue in the 2008 presidential campaign.

Obama’s standards will require automakers to meet a 35 miles-per-gallon standard by 2016 — four years earlier than the same standard imposed by the Energy Security and Independence Act of 2007.

As discussed in the new book “Green Hell,” the only way for carmakers to meet these standards is to make smaller, lighter and deadlier cars.

The National Academy of Sciences has linked mileage standards with about 2,000 deaths per year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that every 100-pound reduction in the weight of small cars increases annual traffic fatalities by as much as 715.

In contrast in the more than six years since the Iraq war began, there have been 4,296 deaths among American military personnel.

And what will be gained by the new mileage standards?

The Natural Resources Defense Council said that the 35 MPG standard would save about one million gallons of gas per day. So how does that savings balance against the 2,000 fatalities per year that the National Academy of Sciences says are caused by those same lighter cars

With a stroke of the pen, Barack Obama has imposed higher fuel-economy standards on the American auto industry. Those standards can only be met by making the average car smaller and lighter than consumers prefer. The inevitable result is that thousands of innocent Americans, possibly tens of thousands, will die painful and sometimes fiery deaths, while many thousands more will be seriously injured. This prospect apparently gave Obama no pause whatsoever. He has never so much as hinted that he sees a moral dimension in the trade-off between human life and reduced carbon emissions.

On the other hand, Obama sees the brief and physically harmless discomfort of three terrorists as posing a moral crisis of almost unparalleled dimension, necessitating endless apology and hand-wringing. The contrast in Obama's priorities is striking, to say the least. I would submit that this is what happens when you substitute preening for intelligent policy-making.

Come on, BB...there's a long list of things that kill more US people every year than the war in Iraq did in six...suicides, drownings, not to mention every major disease. Cigarettes alone are blamed for 430,000. Imagine where social security would be without their impact?

We can more than offset those 2000 presumed fatalities by outlawing cell phones.

Or do like Saudi Arabia and pass a law stating that anyone involved in a wreck who was on a cell phone gets the death penalty. 'Cause that will fly in this country.

More dead Americans will make a lot of people happy, I'm sure.

eh they are totally ignoring the underlying reason for more deaths in smaller cars. Namely, 98% of the american car driving public, can't freakin drive. No seriously, I mean dang watch traffic sometime, you will see speedfreaks weaving in and out of traffic to get someplace two seconds faster than anyone else. You will see motorcyclists in tshirts and flip flops driving on the median between lanes so they can go 10 miles an hour faster than anyone else.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Not to mention cell phones, changing the CD or tape, changing the radio station, reaching into the glove box for anything including a kitchen sink, shaving, doing makeup, getting dressed, reading a book and half climbing into the back seat to get something. I've seen all of that several times over the last decade, I'm skipping a few even.:eek::eek:

yet fewer people were killed in auto accidents in 2008 resulting in new record low fatalities.

I suspect the lowered fatalities were due to people driving fewer miles when the price of gas was so high.

The certain path to victory is to get the insurgents to put their bombs in new fuel efficient cars.

Yo, BB, chill the fuck out.

You'll just need to make sure that those additional highway deaths are of belligerent Muslims. Then you'll be happy.
