Many of you know that I have had open heart surgery to fix up some dodgy valves. It turns out, Robin Williams and I belong to the same Zipper Club since his aortic valve was a time bomb in his chest, too. He was refreshingly funny and candid in his interview on David Letterman last night and if you'd like a bit of education about OHS and how positive it is, please tune in to youtube and search for Mr Williams 13-05-2009.

I may change my title to "Truffle Hunter" after watching.

I wondered if that was the same surgery you had. Well, I'm glad yours and his were both successful. I like having both of you around. And thanks for the heads-up on Youtube. I heard he was going to be on Letterman last night. My plan was to watch the Red Sox beat the Angels and then see Robin. Well I fell asleep around ten and the Sox lost lol. At least I can still see Robin tonight. :D

a very good friend of mine

just suffered a major attack with this same problem...she was lucky that she did not have a heart attack but, her heart is swelled and the upper chamber is full of clotting
the doctors say she need this valve repaired but , they need to have the clotting
gone...did you have any of this and did the swelling and clots get better...blue

You can see him tonight? Is he on another show?

I missed the show last night. I absolutely adore Robin Williams. I have an autographed picture of him in my bedroom.

Oh, wow. I just noticed this was an older thread that I missed. LMAO. I need to wake up.

It sounds like your friend has either a stenosed (narrow) mitral valve or on the the other side, a tricuspid insufficiency (lax and improperly closing) complicated with atrial fibrillation. These things feed off each other ... the worse things get, the faster they get worse.

I didn't have a problem with clotting (apart from a genetic condition that makes it more likely I will have clots in my peripheral veins), my heart was beginning to remodel because of the extra work the muscles had to do to provide my body with oxygen-rich blood through an opening narrower than a pencil. Normally, an aortic valve opening is over an inch in diameter mine had narrowed considerably. I had some enlargement but my symptoms effected quality of life and in that way they became noticeable before I was in extreme danger, like your friend.

If you'd like, PM me and I'll point her towards a wonderful online community of valve survivors. She will find solace and reassurance in visiting along with an education only those who've been over that mountain can provide.
