Some Annon's Are Getting Annoying

Greetings all!

Figured to share this, since the whole schpeal has me either grinding-teeth mad or actually amused that this sort of deal has to be posted about.

Two stories I posted recenty just came up on the "New Stories" que this week. One of which is a continuation of a tale I expected to be just a one-shot, but it's turned into a three-parter: the first chapter "Discovering Her Past", and the second "Discovering Our Present" and a third yet to be finished. This story -- about a son who discovers his mother did some adult films when she was younger, and the resulting revelation brings them together as lovers -- was a reaction to a Lit story of the same topic, that in my opinon wasn't so well done.

So, as it stands, comments have been rather complimentary about the two chapters out so far... until I get this e-mail today from an annon who writes:

I HATE stories that end with "To be continued" or in some other way indicate that this is only the first chapter without informing the readers of this important fact BEFORE they open the fucking thing. I hate it so much that, after years of putting up with this shit, I decided that all such stories get an automatic rating of one (1).

Since it is obvious that you don't give a fuck about the readers nor your own story, you have no business -- you have no right -- to be pissed about this. It's what you deserve. Actually, you deserve a lower rating, but that's all they'll allow.

Now, usually I brush off such comments, but lately it's this general comment -- about the "To Be Continued..." tag that's got me irked.

I mean, I was trained in the classical forms of English, Grammar and writing. You just don't stop a story and leave the words to end on the page, without putting a "The End" or a "To Be Continued..." tag there, if there's more story to tell. Plus, I don't personally like to use "Chapter 1, Chp. 01, etc." tags when I put the titles down in the submission forms. Simply, because I prefer it as such, so my titles don't sounded like they're canned or that all I do all day is sit and crank out stories like a production line.

What's really getting crumbs under my skin about this, is that this annon-person as the gall to tell me that "I deserve to get a low grade, because I CLEARLY don't care about my readers!" and that I have no right to be upset over his comments?

Well, I don't know who this "Annon" is, but I have three things to lay out for him/her:

-- One, I do indded CARE about my readers. I want them to have an entertaining, enjoyable experience when they read my works (That they "get their cookies" too, is just bonus really). Which is why I try to craft each tale and put as much effort into writing these erotica stories as I do for my pro works.

-- Two, Just because I didn't warn you -- the reader -- before you clicked on the link to open up the page of my story, that this story was a multi-parter isn't indicative of my being unfeeling or lazy. There is such a thing as wanting the reader to become embroiled in anticipation for another helping of the story; as putting the whole tale out in one slug just isn't practically with longer prose or stuff that only will come in single chapters, one at a time.

-- and Three, If you've got enough gumption to send me an email to tell me what you think, then have the cajones to put a name or return email up so that I can reply to your comments. Otherwise, you run the risk of being just plain forgotten -- as it usually the case -- or becoming a focus of a post like this. That's rare, but sometimes it's justified.

I'm done soapboxing. What does everyone else think of this? Am I overreacting, or should I be justified in being a little bit ticked off on this matter?

Stay Crispy, kids.

Whenever I get a flaming email, I don't even bother to finish reading it. At the first insult, I hit the delete button and then go on with my life. Slime are beneath notice.

I think you are over-reacting because, um, it is Chapter One. There's more to come. And this guy has no idea when it's coming. So he's annoyed. And he voted accordingly. Others, less annoyed, don't vote like that. Thicken that skin, brother Stephen!

I think a legitmate dislike was voiced. I think judging a story wholly on that and giving it a 1 for that reason alone is not reasonable.

(1) You can disable annon comments, which will force people to e-mail you if they want to say anything about your story. If you don't disable such comments, you're stuck with them.

(2) You can disable voting, so no one can ever give you one star for any reason ever again. Of course, they can't give you 5 stars either, but there you go. Voting is a gamble.

(3) Both you and the reader over-reacted. The reader does invest their time and energy in reading your story, and it's not beyond the pale for them to feel that you, the writer, have wasted their time by making them invest in this story with no hint that there would be no pay-off because it was only chapter 1. They have a right to be annoyed at you for not telling them that and giving them the option to invest or not invest. I'm sure YOU would be equally annoyed if you bought a book and only at the end of it found out it was the first in a series. I'm sure YOU would prefer to be warned on the cover that it was the first in a series so that you could decide if it was worth your time.

That said, the reader does not have the right to get batshit crazy about it as if you killed their dog. Clearly, they took out on you anger over this that had been building up. Anger against many writers that do this. That's not fair. The story certainly shouldn't have been voted a "1" just for that. But that's what happens when anyone is allowed to be a critic and vote according to likes/dislikes however petty.

So yes, you have as much right as they to be angry, and as little right to be over-the-to-angry about what happened.

Not really. You can just zap them if you like.
Granted, but I got the impression that SS was pissed that annon didn't have "enough gumption" to send an email or provide a name/email so that a reply to these comments could be sent.

Hence, I offered an option where they would always get comments with a return email address rather than annon comments that can't be replied to.

Though, frankly (4) A writer can reply to such comments if they like by simply posting on their own story. But most of us don't like to do that.

If the story stands on its own, the reader has nothing to complain about. However, if the story is incomplete, you owe the reader the courtesy of mentioning that at the top. That way, readers (like me) who are not into chaptered stories won't feel deceived.

What's ludicrous about the situation is the fact that it's all free. If the readers were paying to read your story, their needs would be legitimate, but they're not. I think this site attracts a significant number of assholes who take the work here for granted, so screw 'em!

Although it's admirable to write for the reader, you're never going to please everyone, so just do what pleases you, and do it well.
