In a strongly worded statement, the Vatican defended the pope's view that condoms aren't the answer to Africa's AIDS epidemic and could make it worse. On his way to Africa last month, he said the best strategy is the church's effort to promote sexual responsibility through abstinence and monogamy.

I'm not Catholic and believe it is a dead church but in defense of the Pope I will say nothing is wrong with a little bit of common sense and morality. Promiscuity leads to STD's. Condoms are not 100 % safe. The days of free love are over because if you haven't noticed it can kill.

and applying western religious morality to a place where many/most people believe that having sex with a virgin will cure AIDS is pretty fucking stupid.

Condoms work, and help stop the spread of AIDS... using the epidemic to further the goals of the missionaries there is only compounding the problem.

The church message has always been about monogamy (preferably when married) but the church knows and understands that we are still going to have sex because we are a bunch of sinners The popes message has nothing to due with the goals of missionary. Condoms work but they are not 100%. Like I said I'm not catholic and have no belief in the popes authority though I am a Christian. I'm a man of the world and I do not blindly follow the teachings of any "church." the pope statements that to combat Aids is by abstinence and monogamy is not incorrect. Of course to the swinging lifestyle that some live of course they would take offense at his statements. I respect a pope who sticks by the teaching of the gospels more than a pope who changes the view just to fit in.c
