I'm not sure about Photoshop as I haven't got it, yet.

I was doing a similar method as you described in one of my programs though and like you, found edges were sometimes a problem and then found the tutorial for GIMP. I really need to invest in Photoshop I think as when processing from RAW, I seem to need to do a bit in 2-3 different programmes if I want to do very much fiddling at all, and it can get tiring and confusing if my concentration is not great at the time.

Hope you get your camera soon....fortunately, you don't need to spend a lot to get a good one these days. You can of course, but you can get great shots out of fairly inexpensive ones.

Much faster than trying to select all the little bits and colorize... I used to dable in the hand coloring of B&W images and let me tell you it is a skill, not something to play at. The digital age has made it easier, but it is still a talent.

One thing to think about if you are a serious photo editor is get a digital tablet (wacom) instead of trying to use a clumbsy mouse. I would be lost without mine

well in photoshop the selecting of different parts wasn't as difficult, i found that easier than with gimp... but i tried that with the layers and eraser in gimp now, and it actually worked quite well, i was happy with the result...
