How many chapters?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question, so forgive me if it isn't.

I'm a first-time author, and at least one regular reader I've befriended thinks my developing story is pretty good. I've written 3 chapters, and I have plans for at least 2 more.

My question is, do writers typically submit a few chapters at a time? Or all chapters once they're all done?

Generally a lot of people here post in chapters yes.

but I'm no expert, it defintely depends upon your style and the length of your chapters.

if your looking to post into novels and novellas then go ahead with as long as you want. But if your posting into another category then anymore then 30 ms word pages seems to long and is best stopped there and the rest posted as another chapter

Some do one, and some do the other. My personal advice is to wait until the entire story is finished, because that way you can go back and change things in the early chapters if you have changed your mind or made some sort of mistake.

As to the other question of whether the story goes up as one story of 20 Lit pages, or as 12 separate postings of 2 Lit pages each (1 Lit page = about 3750 words), that is purely a matter of choice.

If you send 12 separate postings of chapters, put a note in the notes box and the powers that be will (try to) ensure that the chapters are posted one per day in the right order.

If you post in chapters when the thing isn't finished, your loyal readers may face extensive waits between chapters, in other words, have to wait while you're writing the next bit.

Now, I'm guilty as charged of making readers wait. It doesn't always go down too well, LOL. Some readers will even go as far as giving you a low score because they have to wait. Those types of readers are few and far between, but I've had it happen. Remember, readers don't always understand just how long the writing process can take sometimes.

But on the positive side of submitting a story one chapter at a time, it does at least give you the impetus to get going on the next bit. For me, that's been the most valuable thing about doing it. Pretty selfish, I know. But it gives me the kick up the ass I need to keep going - and finish whatever it is that I'm writing.
