Obama had it wrong when he said we cling to God and guns. Small town America, at least much of it clings to football. It's not just a southern thing either. One only has to look at how insane the whole Ohio St/Michigan thing is.

And here we have a seat next year inside the Georgia locker room. I'm not saying Jeff is the first, or the only athlete to do it , but I think it's way cool that he is doing it.

And anyone can do it. If you can post at lit, you can have a blog. I think we'll see a lot more of it in the future.

WD, I don't want to hijack your thread, and please take this as good natured humor: I've gotta say I laughed out loud when I read this sentence. Because a couple of days ago, when you were writing about why national dems have a hard time gaining support in the rural south, you mentioned abortion & gay rights (i.e., religious issues) and guns. When I read that post, the very first thing I thought was: Yes, we know this! As usual, Obama was right! ;)

Politics aside, I know nothing about blogging. I went to your link and am wondering - did a ballplayer really take the time to write all that out? I'm suspecting ghost writer/ publicist here.

I have a business related blog and I do it dutifully and with gritted teeth, but I mostly hate writing it. Confession.

Obama would have sounded smarter had he kept his mouth shut and not uttered that sentence.

There's really no point to insulting large swaths of the population by pigeonholing them with a cute catchphrase.

I liked that about as much as Bush calling Kerry a "Massachussetts Liberal" with a sneer during the debates.

You guys do both get that if you're President, you have to be president of these areas too, right?

Clever and facile does not good statesmen make.

But I like football less than I like God or guns.

FFS, Obama's quote in full says that POOR AND DESPERATE people will turn to guns (distrust) and religion (comfort) . Period. It's as controversial as saying everyone has to fart when you put this quote in the economic context it was cast in. Because amazingly I bet guns and Jesus aren't quite as big among the bailout bonus set as they are among rural and disenfranchised people. Or urban and disenfranchised people, frankly.

However I live in the non pro-America world. So I'm an amateur or an anti-American.

Obviously. That's why it's a joke.

Why it wasn't obvious on paper...I dunno.

There's also San Francisco wanting to name their sewage treatment plant after George Bush.

*sigh*

I hear the chuckling and then I ask the same people if they'd really like it if Austin named one of their sewage treatment plants after Martin Luther King.

Oh, NOW you're mad. Huh.

Regardless of context, I STILL think it was a dumb thing to say.

And I generally think Obama talk good.

I think it's a case of people being accountable in history.

Don't do anything that monumentally stupid and do things that advance humanity and you get an afterlife prize. Act like a moron and reap what you sow.

I don't think we're gonna see Ralph Nader street after his death. There's ridiculousness on the right and left.

Apples/Oranges.

I've found that all political parties have wicked senses of humors, but the first bit of humanity they strip from their opponents is the right to the same.

I think he should at least have a recycling center named after him.

MY comment in post 2, above, was a joke.

;) = JM is goofin' around.

Jesus christ, people.

For the record, my response to WD, when I was being serious, is here.

So I can't be serious about how I feel just 'cause you're joshing?

You're SO SELFISH!

It's always all about YOU, YOU, YOU!

I still hate football. I was in the marching band.

I have no way of knowing. He only posts about twice a week but if he needed help I'm sure a lot of really cute English majors would volunteer.

I bet you didn't know that UGA is the oldest public university in the county? Founded in 1785.

I was QB and team captain.

Did you wear a cute skirt?

I did not. I carried a Flugelhorn and was forced to wear a polyester uniform. Just because I wanted to play French Horn the rest of the year in orchestra.

I'm BITTER and SCARRED and nobody CARES!

Not even god or guns.

My family supported LSU. I dared not speak out. It was worse than the racism.

That damned...tiger...of...oppression...

Those uniforms always looked more miserable than Latex in Texas.

We used to yell out the bus windows while at red lights..."HELP, WE'RE BEING MARCHED AGAINST OUR WILL AND FORCED TO WEAR POLYESTER!"

Well...I did.

Haha @ the English majors - I'm sure some of them would!

You're right, I didn't know it, but that's awesome.

hijacked from post numba' two... lol.

Blogging is an excellent way to peak inside someone's life. Its really just a cheap personal newspaper. I wrote my paper in english class this week on how this is the generation that speaks for itself. And I believe thats true. Quite a few years ago the only way you could get "news" about yourself was either through a biography or doing something worth mentioning in the news. Now, with blogs people can instantly create their own news source and have the capability of reaching millions.

Celebrity blogs have been taking off and it doesn't surprise me that sports blogs would also be popular. Everyone wants to connect with someone else, blogs are a very easy way to bring someone like a celebrity or sports star down to your level.

We have a great high school band. I love to get there early and watch them march in down the hill and around to the visitor side where I sit. Then on to the field where they do the spell Indian cheer.

But it sucks that they do the same fucking halftime show every game. Do they only know four songs? I mean they change it every year but still.

Simply because Todd Heap and Terrell Suggs are from there I've chosen to root for Arizona State. Mock me at your leisure. Also, Chris Cooley's blog is far better because he puts a lot of personality into his writing whereas the one linked to in the first post seems a little impersonal.

I was a sports hostage. My brothers were basketball players, football players and wrestlers.

I was always sitting in some cold/hot uniformly uncomfortable bleachers, reading some book. When I was really little I made myself the cheerleaders mascot by one day just starting to sit next to them and do the cheers with them because I was bored and they kept me because they thought I was cute.

All I wanted to do was go home and quietly be a nerd or an artist. The intersection of orchestra and marching band was unfortunate, but also shows HOW MUCH I wanted to be a nerd or an artist.

We were by all accounts an excellent marching band accompanying an excellent football team and we were always pretty close to state champions one way or the other.

Ironically excelling at what we did meant we did it ALL YEAR long in championships and band competitions.

I feel your pain.

Um what she said.

My blogging efforts have seen several incarnations. I'm really happy with the look of my current one (it's vanilla), but I'm still figuring out my voice. I'm funniest when I don't hold back, and in my first attempt at blogging I really didn't, and I had a little following too. But I have to be more cautious and private now. Such is life. I'm hopeful I'll figure out the right balance soon enough.

Anyway, I don't read tons of blogs, but the sort of special interest blogs can be very useful. I read cooking blogs, and get great recipes that way, and I read a ton of remodeling, diy type blogs. When you're throwing yourself into something new, like remodeling a specific type of house, for example, blogs are an amazing resource.
