Is there a reason this forum has no moderator?

No one brave enough?

Just wondering.

Hey, this is the civilised forum! :D

Here's what you do;
click on the troll's name besides his stenchy post.
choose "veiw profile"
Look for "add to ignore list"
add him to your ignore list.
Any threads he's started will be invisible, and his posts in any other thread will be collapsed.

it's the best we can do, sorry...

I think you can count the folks running this site on no more than two fingers (but I could be wrong)--one primarily getting those 50-some new stories posted every day and one making sure the Web site stays up. Babysitting threads as well pushes that envelope pretty hard.

Just would be nice if ...

some topics were re-directed to the general forum.

... in a perfect world.

But SO, your point is well taken.

You forgot the part-timer who wipes all the nasty spam threads away.

But some forums are moderated, others not, so was wondering. Really don't know much about it all. Aren't they volunteers of some sort? (And very much appreciated ones, for sure!)

Seems it would be a busy job ordering all the waayyy off-topic threads here down the the General forum, but might be quite satifying for someone. Housecleaning without leaving the computer!

:D

We don't want them directed to the GB. If we did, we'd post there to begin with.

Just doesn't ever seem much "discussion of the craft of writing" is going on here, and much what does go on seems to be awfully rough to be called "socializing."

But then, it's a rough world out there and what do I know?

Nominally they are moderated. The moderators seem to be mostly dormant in the forums I look at (and in one, the moderator is the worst of the posters as far as nasty combativeness is concerned--but, luckily, is largely absent). And all of the moderators are volunteers. I'm not sure what the administrators would say if someone volunteered to moderate this one.

I think it's been proposed before, and the idea rejected. Mostly by the people who roam 'round here.

And the folks who run the site are big on free speech. ;)

But really, none of the threads are off-topic here since when you enter the forums, this is what it says:

Authors' Hangout
A place for writers and readers to socialize and discuss the craft of writing.

So I'd say pretty much anything is on-topic here since we're here to socialize. :)

You're visiting the wrong threads. Try a game thread, or the "blurt" thread for real socializing. If you want to talk about writing, try the story discussion circle forum.

Although, we do, on occasion, talk about writerly things here... ;)

Oh, you think all of the posters are here to socialize? From what I see, a few are here to break up any chance of that. But I recognize there's a think line between what fits here and what (and who) should be spun off to the GB.

Well, we are mostly writers here, so if you want to start a discussion thread, I'm sure there'd be no lack of participants.

I guess socializing is in the eye of the beholder.

American Heritage:

Socialize:
1. To place under government or group ownership or control.
2. To make fit for companionship with others; make sociable.
3. To convert or adapt to the needs of society.
v. intr.
To take part in social activities.

I guess I was working under one definition and not taking in the bigger picture.

My bad. I was working under 2, but need to shift over to 3, so that we might not ever get to 1.

Moving right along ...

Drip, that's quite a snarky post.

If you'd spent much time posting in the General Board you'd probably get more of a feel for that place as compared to this.

If you want a writing thread here, start one.

If you want to contribute to a writing thread in progress, please do so.

If you want editing or story ideas seek out those forums.

But the birthday threads, the life story threads, the politics, the congratulations and concerns and flirting and fluffy idiotic threads? Some of that is, quite frankly, the result of many of us knowing each other for multiple years. Many of us have met in person and can't wait to do so again.

This is a place for people to hang out and sometimes we talk about writing. For many of us, it's also relaxation time.

So what if every thread isn't about writing techniques? So the hell what?

Do what you wish, but you certainly don't get to decide how the rest of us post.

We are quite social-ized here. Polite too...unless we're poked in the wrong way! And, unlike the GB, we use spellcheck.

Seriously, post this in the GB and the first two responses you'll get are "STFU" and "post your tits."

Drip has been living in the editors forum, which is a quiet backwater-- much the way AH was, once on a time....

I remember those days with fondness, honestly.

Couple of months back, Laurel responded to my nudging, and we talked about why there is no moderation. I do not agree with her, but she said that free speech is more important than social harmony, and she refused to censor anything-- be it hate speech or whatever.

I have seen some pretty effective ways for a community to be self-policing, and maintain an anarchistic framework at the same time... but AH is my home, dammit. Like the filthy streets of Hollywood, we take the bad with the good.

Well, the board's been a bit snarky today on the majority-ignore-threads - like Scouries'... I'm guessing that's what prompted the complaint.

But I could be wrong...

I have scouries on ignore so I don't know what is happening there.

I may have to put ami back on ignore, especially if he starts any more ridiculous threads.

Personally, I like the way we self-moderate this forum. It's called threadjacking. :D

I agree.

It never ceases to amaze me: folks come in here thinking that there has to be a teacher, an authority figure.

Good god, we're all adults.
