Just doing a little research... thought it would be fun to list all those distinctive things we remember from the 80's...

Like...

Who shot JR?
Rubik’s cube
ET
Farm Aid
The Brat Pack
MTV
Jane Fonda's workout videos
The War on Drugs
Miniskirts
Calvin Kleins
Polo (the cologne, not the game ;) )

.....

what else?

Calvin Klien
Bill Blass
Cocaine
Funny haircuts, funny suits, funny fashions all around!
the rise of the MetroSexual,
Hiphop, breakdance, graffiti that was ART, the birth of the real art of DJ-ing, scratching.

Prince's music influenced everyone-- remember that high-notes keyboard sound?

BIG hair...unless it was brushing the roof of your car, it wasn't big enough.

Leg warmers
Def Leppard
Ozzy went pop for one album - shame on him
There were a ton of one hit wonders during the eighties: Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell (they use it for the Geico commercials now), Funkytown by Lipps, Cars by Gary Numan, Turning Japanese by the Vapors, Double Dutch Bus by Frankie Smith, I Want Candy, by Bow Wow Wow, etc.
The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Weird Science were all must-see movies

Where's the beef?

That one always pops up in my mind, because that cultural event came and went while I was out of the country, and I really scratched my head whenever it came up afterward.

And, mentioning "scratched my head," "A little dab'al do you" did the same thing for me when I was out of the country in the 50s.

The Urban Cowboy craze - and the emergence of the C&W mega disco ala Gilley's. It was also the death of many local C&W cover bands who suddenly had no place to play. (Speaking from experience.)

Slap bracelets

Rubik's Cube

Pac-Man

Parachute Pants

Cabbage Patch Dolls

Prince (when he was still Prince and not the symbol thingy of course)

Michael Jackson (when he was still semi-normal......and black)

More One Hit Wonders:

Walkin' On Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
Turning Japanese - The Vapors
Mickey - Toni Basil
Something's Going On - Frida (one of the members of ABBA if I recall)
Don't Wanna Fall In Love - Jane Child
Take On Me - Aha
Too Shy - Kajagoogoo
Mexican Radio - Wall Of Voodoo
Twilight Zone - Golden Earring
No More Words - Berlin
She Blinded Me With Science - Thomas Dolby
Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood

Holy crap, I better let someone else name some. This is just some of the music I have on my mp3 player. :D

No, I'm not an 80's junkie...honest! Hey! Give me back my Walkman!

ETA: Okay, so I repeated a few things already mentioned. You say 80's and my brain goes into overdrive! :)

Walkmans! OMG!

I still HAVE one. My kids asked me, "What IS that?"

"It's an old sort of... Ipod..."

*snerk*

I actually had my niece ask what an album was.

Then quite a few years ago, one of my best friend's kids heard the theme song from Men In Black on the radio and said "I didn't know Will Smith was a rapper."

I was driving them home at the time, thank god it was all side roads cuz I busted a gut laughing then had to explain what Will Smith did before he was a movie star.

Which was odd, because one of their favorite shows was "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Guess they were too young to make the connection.

You solved Rubik's Cube???

I just peeled off the stickers and switched them around. :D

My brother actually popped a couple of the squares off and took the whole thing apart. My dad bought a book on how to solve it, but I don't think he ever did.

Top Gun
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
GI Joe the movie
Ghostbusters
The Eagles went to the Superbowl with Ron "Jaws" Jaworski
Joe Montana and Jerry Rice were the top QB/WR tandem

We Are the World (Ethiopia famine relief)
permed hair
preppies
that whole sweater worn over the shoulder look
The first Star Trek movies
The rise of MTV

I had a mullet for a while, though we didn't call it that then. After that was cut off, I had a rat tail for a while. I also had the curls hanging down over one eye a la Prince. :D

That was all pretty special. Fer sure.

As far as I was concerned the Cube was a time waster and not a puzzle.

things I think of when thinking 80s?
Hair
Spiked Hair
Long hair on men
Parachute Pants
Break Dancing
Glam Rock

Okay, more:

Karate Kid (Wax On, Wax Off)

Spuds Mackenzie

Cola Wars including New Coke vs. Coke Classic

L.A. Gear (had me a pair of black and white high tops with neon pink laces :D)

Knight Rider (who didn't want that car, huh?)

The Alex P. Keaton look. (I actually went to school with a guy who could've been a dead ringer for Michael J. Fox - tie and all)

VH-1 (the MTV for our parents - more mellow stuff than what MTV had at the time)

Thursday night TV on NBC: Cosby Show, Family Ties, Cheers, Night Court. (Cheers premiered in 1982 on my 15th birthday)

Facts of Life (You take the good, you take the bad, you take 'em both and there you have...)

More One Hit Wonders:

Secret Lovers - Atlantic Starr
Let's Hear It For the Boy - Deneice Williams
Harden My Heart - Quarterflash
Ghostbusters - Ray Parker, Jr.
Only the Lonely - The Motels
It's Raining Men - The Weather Girls
867-5309 (Jenny) - Tommy Tutone (How many people tried to call that number?)

Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice (Yo, Vanilla, kick it one time, boy-ee)
Jam On It - Newcleus

All right, I'm going. Sorry.
