Beyond that, there's the understanding that we're really arguing with you so that you can find the flaws in your own position and strengthen it. Which means that we're actually doing you a favor by disagreeing or playing devil's advocate.

I taught at a Jewish middle school for a year. The staff meetings probably would have seemed pointlessly argumentative to anyone not used to discussing everything in life like this.

I know people slice up the regions in different ways. If I'm talking about southerners, I'm thinking about light blue states *minus* Florida in the map below.

Not just religiously, but culturally. There are several people who are Jew, who don't practice it religiously.

And in this case we know the regulars on here well enough to know there's quite a few Jews.

Northern Virginia is actually mid-Atlantic. I hear you about Northern Florida, but I've been to both Miami and Richmond and its just sooo not the same.

Quit trying to pawn off W VA! Tell you what - why don't we just lump it in with Ohio and PA and make it a rust belt state.

Why does everyone think of WV as such this shithole kind of place? I mean, yeah, grinding poverty for sure, but as far as natural beauty not even PA has as much.

There's this great divide between "The South" and "The Deep South," too. I guess, geographically, you could say WV is "The South," but I don't really think so. I also don't count VA as "The South," either, so maybe I'm not the right person to ask.

"The Deep South" is, like, GA, AL, MS, the southern part of TN, and maybe parts of LA and AR. (Don't know too much about LA and AR, so I can't say much about them, sorry.) Even in the Deep South, there are cultural differences, mostly between the upcountry (of the Appalachian foothills) and the lowcountry (of the flatter land to the south). I can listen to people's accents and tell you WHERE in AL they're from. Creepy.

I, personally, grew up on the line between upcountry and lowcountry and have all the obnoxious, rednecky traits of both. I'm a cultural mess.
