By now, most of you have probably heard about the monkey, Travis, in Connecticut who went wild and mauled a woman. Poor Travis was a domestic pet and had never been violent before. He was, sadly, shot and killed after the unfortunate incident.

Well, after watching some news material on him and this tragic event, it got me to thinking. Like monkeys, are there some humans who cannot be tamed? I mean, are there those of us who are so wild and operating at such an instinctive level that we can't be trained? Just curious. Any thoughts?

Chimps (which are apes, not monkeys) don't have the developed prefrontal lobes that Homo Sapiens has. The function of the pre-fronts seems to be most of all, to restrain those impulses-- all kinds of impulses.
From the neuroscientific point of view, ironically perhaps, the essence of “free will” appears to be the capacity for inhibition – the capacity to choose not to do something. What distinguishes human beings more than anything else from their nearest primate relatives is the development of a higher-level “self” system, which is organized fundamentally on inhibitory mechanisms. These mechanisms, which have their physical locus in the prefrontal lobes (the crowning glory of the human brain), bestow on us the capacity to suppress the primitive, stereotyped compulsions that are encoded in our inherited emotional memory systems. On this basis, the inhibitory prefrontal lobes may be regarded, with some justification, as the very tissue of our humanity.[Solms, Turnbull, page 281]

Any human missing such a large portion of the brain is going to show other physical abnormalities as well...

When humans go crazy like this and can't be contained, the police shoot them dead sometimes too, don't they? Think that maybe yesterday was just a slow news day.

I've read more than one instance of someone off their meds that get caught up with police while carrying a gun. It usually ends up fatal.

Ah well, RIP Travis. As to the matter of humans with impulse and instinct control issues, I can be a beast sometimes, for sure, especially when I haven't been fed properly. But, that's another story....

Primates make terrible pets . . . and that includes the bipedal ones, despite a recurring fantasy in this forum. ;)

I can think of at least one who haunts the political threads around here, but it's sort of preplexing, since he can have a very literate discussion with you on non-political topics.

All I know is that the fewer squirrel monkeys there are in my life the better. Nasty little bastards, plus they follow me EVERYWHERE. :(

Have they tried eating your face, tho? Possibly mistaken you for a breadfruit? ;)

No, but they did kidnap me once. They also have a nasty habit of throwing poo. Not fun.

What did they demand in payment for your release? A barrel of bananas? :D

Some people on this site fling poo as well. They're not fun either.

Fortunately I escaped before they could complete their nefarious scheme.

It's all here: UCAESM
