Help! Trojan Downloader Virus has hijacked my laptop!

I am currently running PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Norton. I've found that I need to run SD in conjunction with Trend, Mac or Norton to get rid of shit.

You might ask Desert Pirate about this.

I had a similar thing last year form clicking on a movie site and had a hell of a time with it using McAfee and Spy bot Search and Destroy.

I just lost my desk top to a HAL.dll file disruption?

Can't even fire the thing off in a GUI. For a mouse jockey like me that is the seventh level of Hell to be cast into a Command Line interface.

You might try using your operating system master CD to boot up and then use the various virus killers on the C: drive.?

For an online scan that has worked for me on some major butt viruses...
HouseCall Penecillan. (I believe that's the name) I'll go find the link for you.

ETA:
Here is the one I have used:

Web Root is the best for me. I had a Trojan downloader that damn near destroyed my computer last year and Web Root took care of business. (Sadly, I lost a lot of data. But, I salvaged the computer.)

If any of the suggested programs like malwarebytes refuse to run, try renaming the exe file of the malware killer. A lot of these bugs block programs that can eradicate them, but aren't smart enough to stop a simple rename of the malware killing file.

Check out www.majorgeeks.com for lots of free or inexpensive software that zap viruses. I had one last year that generated endless popups...I 'think' I used Anti-Malware to get rid of it, but it took a while.

If all self-cleaning attempts fail, take the problem here:

It will probably take one of the experts a day or two to get to you because of the queue, but I've never seen them fail to get things under control. Just read the FAQ for the procedure about making a post.

Following the guidelines properly will often give them enough information in the very first post to identify nearly anything haywire in the system, and guide them to the proper tools/procedure to walk you through stripping the bugs out.

My favorite is to use an IDE(or SATA) to USB adaptor. Plug infected HDD into clean computer and scan the drive. Many of the truly malicious programs can only be killed this way. If Windows is running on the infected drive, the infection will replicate when you try to kill it. If you scan it as an extra drive with Windows running on the host, things can't replicate.

You should be able to get an adaptor for about $20. Mine can handle IDE, SATA, and Laptop drives. :D

Most useful malware clean-up tool of the last 10 years :D

In your situation, I would recommend that you download and run EVERY free anti-virus/anti-worm program you can find. Each one will kill some things that the others don't. It's a pain!

If all else fails, try : http://www.wilderssecurity.com

They are pretty good at fixing things.

Also : http://www.ewido.net/en/

though they are part of AVG now.

A good thing to have is an operating system that can be run from disc - no virus, worm or trojan can touch/ change it. You need to know which service pack is installed for Windows and have a few CDs that you can burn.(in case you make a mistake) Virtually all problems can be rectified by using the bootable recovery disc.
The link is here : http://www.ubcd4win.com/

I had a hardware problem - part of my boot sector had a flaw, so that the computer would not boot past the first screen. I was able to rewrite to another sector and fix the problem.

When you do get your laptop up and running properly again, I strongly urge you to look into this solution for future problems.

Good luck

Ken

Or just reformat the damn thing and start from scratch.

That is, if you don't have Essential and Irreplacable Things on there. In which case you copuy those to a USB memory.

Then you wipe the puter clean.
