After reviewing acknowledgments of God from all 50 state constitutions, one is faced with the prospect that maybe the ACLU and the out-of-control Federal courts are wrong!

If you read these constitutions, you will find that at no time is anyone told that they "MUST" worship God.

PREAMBLE

The Constituent Assembly affirms the decision of the Portuguese people to defend their national independence, to guarantee the fundamental rights of citizens, to establish the basic principles of democracy, to safeguard the primacy of the rule of law in a democratic state and to open the way to a socialist society, with respect for the will of the Portuguese people and the goal of building a freer, more just and more fraternal country.

The Constituent Assembly, meeting in plenary session on 2 April 1976, approves and decrees the following Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.​
That's the way it's done. :p
 
You know, as an outsider, looking at the preambles to the various Constitutions of the States, the United States looks like a theocracy.

And yet people still wonder why Oklahoma is called the Buckle of the Bible Belt. And no I never knew there was even a preamble to the State's constitution.

DP I can't understand why anyone would object to the posting of the different State Preambles. I found it very interesting. If one happens to be wrong they could just post the correct one.

I liked the other one from a different county also. Those who live in other countries, does your country have Preambles? If so, please post them also.

Amazing. I have this nagging feeling in the pit of my stomach that our politicians really do think their illegal acts are blessed by Him. :rolleyes:
 
The relevance of the fact that the majority of this nations constitutional scribes were all Christian to whether or not the rule of law and a doctrine of universal human rights is valid is, in my opinion, none.

I believe in human rights as a matter of ethics. Not as a dictum from a supreme being. I believe in the rule of law as a matter of principal. Religious attributions are meaningless to me, save that they open the loophole that a person who does not believe in your god has a reason to dispute the validity of your argument.

Hint: there was nothing "right" to apologize for.

Even if DP wasn't the type of superficial "Christian" that I despise, I still wouldn't care. What difference does it make if this god, or that god is mentioned in a state's preamble?

What's the point of his post at all, other than to try to claim superiority for Christians? He's saying that human rights exist because of his god, and that's bullshit. Read Belegon's post above.

I'm faced with the prospect that the constitutions all contain references to "God." Is the ACLU suing to have these references removed? Have the "out-of-control Federal courts" agreed?

I didn't think so.

So well said. I'm pretty happy we just have one. I never really wondered too much why God was mentioned so much, until now. Maybe the idea was that having rights defined by man or men that could be defined wasn't as good an idea as having those rights defined by a God that couldn't be defined. It avoids the whole issue of "these men granted these rights".

Yeah, that's true enough. Maybe if Nevada had a Declaration of Independence we'd take it out of the state constitution.
