I'm getting a tattoo, my first one. The problem being I can't decide where to place it. I'm thinking either my forearm or between my shoulders.

The problem being I would have to resize it for my forearm but on my back I wouldn't be able to see it. Of course showing it off on my back would be a lot more fun.

Thoughts?

what is it and how big is it?

It is a bat and it's about three and a half inches deep and seven wide.

Between your shoulders would probably look great, but I gotta tell you...it's gonna hurt like a motherfucker.

Just sayin'.

(I have four tats)

Agrees with Cloudy. It should go between the shoulders. It'll look fantastic, but oh myyyyyy, the pain. I've got two small ones up in that region. One on each shoulder blade, and I nearly cried when I got those. The others were nothing in comparison.

True, but that's a hell of a place for a first tat.

True. General rule for the uninitiated... the closer to bone, the more it hurts. Right on top of the spine, in between the shoulder blades? Reach back and touch it.

Yeah, that's an ouch spot.

It's a personal and spiritual tattoo so I'm up for the pain.

Yeah, between the shoulders or maybe lower back, right above the butt crack.

Sorry, I'm a guy.

Also, I did some proper measuring. It's 6 inches wide and 2 1/2 deep.

My first tat was actually two tats because I wanted them both so badly... I have enclosed a pic of where they are.... honestly the bottom curve of the Om symbol bothered me some but the dragonfly didn't really bother me. Even the body going down my spin didn't hurt. And I 'HATE' needles.

Nice, good color too.

This is what I am going to get. Probably just the line work unless I can strike up a deal for popping my cherry.
Tribal-ish Bat

Good point, Bel.
I have one around my ankle, as a bracelet. It hurt like hell and I can take pain.

Yeah, my friend passed out while he was getting one in the same location I'm planning. The guy is 6'5 and a former Marine, now police officer. I'm not planning on passing out but if I do I won't feel so bad.

Don't be afraid to ask to take a break if you need to. They'll be happy to accommodate you. :)

I know a guy who has one on his lower abdomen, I mean, really low. Very hot.

Oh, yeah. :D The guy that did one of mine had a low one like that - VERY hot.

I'm a fan of tattoos I have 7 and would love more. I think the pain is well worth it. Hubby has a huge tree on his back like a family tree...the top has his last name then our kids' names in the tree. He said it hurt like hell and I believe him. The tree goes from shoulder to shoulder and neck to the small of his back. I have a cross with my mom's name on my right shoulder blade and I'm pretty sure I blacked out. The pain wasn't the problem for me though, it was after i got it done and needed to clean it and I couldn't reach it! I could just be weird though! Best of luck with your tattoo...if you're anything like me you'll soon see how addictive they really are!

So? What does that have to do with it? I think it'd be damn sexy. But what do I know?

Hmmmm. Agreed. Damn sexy spots. Lower abdomen..you'd be able to see it, and so would any lady who was on her way down there....

The place that I went to has what they call the ceiling of shame... everyone that passed out had their pictures taken while they were passed out... and the pictures were put on the ceiling... 90% of the pics were guys. They told me that it happened alot especially when guys get them across their chest or across their stomachs

I'm not happy with that part of my body right now. My back and my arms I like but I'm still working on getting abs.
Fair enough. But that lovely bat does need a place where whoever is gazing at it can see it in all it's splendor. On your bicep, the wings would curve, and the whole image wouldn't be immediately recognizable. Between the shoulder blades, however, the bat could spread its wings and be seen all at once.

Imagine what an impression it'd make as you remove your shirt ;)

Also, assuming this won't be your only tat, you may want to save your biceps for something that you can develop on down the arms if your choose.

Just something else to consider. Of course, you could have the tattoo artist put mock-ups on your arm to see what it looks like, and then on your back to see what that looks like. Yes?

Before they start a tattoo, they transfer the design to your skin with (I swear) deoderant...it transfers the ink the best. So, yeah, it wouldn't be hard to request it in both places to see what it looks like. :)
