Regardless of race, political or religious affiliation, gender or brand of toothbrush, this site is very helpful in finding a community service project to work on tomorrow.

USA Service

The future is filled with vast and marvelous possibilities. This is a great time to be alive. Let us not despair. And let us go out and work with renewed vigor to make the unfolding work of destiny a reality in our generation.

About USAService.org

Every time our nation faces crisis, our national experience has shown Americans rise to the challenge. While government has an important role to play in helping rekindle our economy and addressing the problems of a distressed nation, President-elect Obama believes each of us, as Americans, have a responsibility to do what we can for our communities and fellow citizens. We are one nation.

The United States is once again at a crossroads and that is why the President-elect hopes to use the occasion of his Inauguration to rally our nation to commit to service in our communities. We are asking for your participation in meeting this challenge.

In 1994, Congress transformed the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday into a national day of community service to further commemorate a man who lived his life in service to others. As a tribute to that legacy and the very real needs of our nation, the President-elect and Vice President-elect have launched a national organizing effort on the eve of their Inauguration to engage Americans in service. This national day of service will fall on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 19, 2009 and, unlike past calls to service, President-elect Obama is calling on all Americans to do more than just offer a single day of service to their cities, towns and neighborhoods. He is asking all of us to make an ongoing commitment to our communities. Never has it been more important to come together in shared purpose to tackle the common challenges we face.

This is great, A. It's such an exciting time with the inauguration so close. Tomorrow I'm spending some one-on-one time with a teenager from the group home where I used to teach. The kids there have a variety of mental and physical disabilities and they're also rotten teenagers, lol, (like 13-17) so they don't get a lot of offers like this.

Whatcha doing? What's anyone else doing if you're participating? Has anyone else been watching the Inaugural coverage on tv or reading about it? There's over a million people right now from all over the country who are in D.C. having a big old party. It's amazing and historical.

Ange, I though that you might like this... :D

We are going to do something local-- there is a service in the am then we will divide up in work teams. My guess is we will do the trail clean-up.

Thanks for taking on a teenager :) He/she might not know yet how fortunate they are to have your time....

I am too excited to even think about the inauguration, like I might jinx it. On election night I swear I had been holding my breath for 3 months and it did not hit me until the whole family walked out......

Tuesday night, I will believe it again!

I don't know the right adjectives. Just wish I were in DC to be a part of it. I was at George Bush Sr.'s because I lived there, and why not? It was pretty cool, but holy cow, there was not THAT much of a crowd at all.
