Circuit City going out of buisness

For anyone who hasn't heard Circuit City declared yesterday that they are going out of business. The remaining 527 stores have been authorized to liquidate their inventory.
Just figured I'd give you all the heads up, in case you needed some new technology.

I never liked Circuit City. Their stores were always a mess with spotty inventory. Sometimes they had what you wanted, like a latest release or an old classic that can still be found elsewhere, but most times they didn't have it, the employees never seemed all that knowledgeable...

I tried not to go there as often as possible.

I heard about this on the news this morning. Doesn't really matter much to me. I usually get all my electronic gizmos and gadgets at Best Buy anyway. Their prices are about the same but their sales people, at least at the stores here by me, are much more helpful.

I had a bad experience with Circuit City quite a few years back and it left a sour taste in my mouth for them after that.

I hope anyone who's bought stuff there with a warranty won't be left holding a worthless piece of paper if their stuff ever breaks.

So much of retail, at least as far as customer service, can be regional. I personally believe that comes from the leadership, so perhaps we had a good regional VP in the SoCal area. Or maybe I just got lucky.

I always had excellent service from the associates at Circuit City. However, the spotty inventory was a problem there, and I often felt the store designs could have used some work. The layouts could be confusing.

There is no CC near my new home. So that is academic for me, now.

I am worried about the 30K new members of the ranks of the unemployed.

Hmmmm well for the time being the sales are...eh. 10% off everything. However that should theoretically change by next weekend, when the liquidation firms move in to advise them

Be very careful with 'closeout sales.' The 50% off is frequently after a big markup and the prices may actually be HIGHER than before.

Ditto.

I can't even remember the last time I went to the one here.

It's going to be so weird not having Circuit City or Mervyns around anymore. The Circuit City in my neighborhood already closed, but there's one in the city my private student lives in, so I'll probably check things out Monday. I did need to get a new microphone, so this works out, although I wish the circumstances were different.

Mervyns closing down is a bit more awkward for me though. Their headquarters is in my area, and I've even played there twice with my high school band. The first time we put together a mini marching band and marched through all the cubicles. It was awesome. The second time we were playing bumper music for their annual Winter Sales meeting. I drove by there recently and saw the sign saying they were clearing out all their office equipment and such. Sad times.

ETA: I also have a good friend who worked for Circuit City and now suddenly has to find new work. I wish all those affected the best of luck.

I doubt you'll get great deals. They'll end up selling their inventory to Best Buy or something, or closing their brick and mortar stores and selling only online - like comp USA.

They used to be real good and had much better service than Best Buy. Then about 5 years ago they tried to save money and dumped all the comission sales force. That's when they suddenly became like Wal-Mart with employees that knew nothing.

I never cared for CIRCUIT CITY. But the empty suits who led them to bankruptcy will move on and bankrupt someone else. Empty suits are like the Langoliers.
