Unlike some other sports, its one game and you're done so every game literally does count. There is no "Oh well...if we lose this we still have tomorrow" stuff. 12 teams enter and battle through 4 weekends for the championship. This year the top teams were;
AFC: Tennessee, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Indianapolis, Miami, and Baltimore
NFC: Philadelphia, New York [Giants], Atlanta, Arizona, Minnesota, and Carolina.

Yesterday started the games with Atlanta versus Arizona, and Indianapolis versus San Diego. Both games just exemplified playoff football, down to the wire, exciting games. You had Atlanta led by Rookie of the Year Matt "Matty Ice" Ryan against Arizona's Super Bowl veteran and league MVP candidate Kurt Warner. The whole game was back and forth, Arizona striking first with a spectacular TD catch by Larry Fitzgerald. But Atlantas rushing attack figured out how to break free, with Turner and Norwood slashing through starting in the second quarter. Coming into the second half, Atlanta was up by three, but Arizona was the leagues top 3rd quarter team this past year, and proved it, with two TDs scored. Leading into the last half of the fourth quarter, Arizona was up by two TDs, Atlanta had a big drive to give them a TD and a chance at the game. But, with just over two minutes to go, Arizona was out of field goal range, on a crucial 3rd and 16, if Atlanta stopped them, Atlanta had a shot at a winning TD. Steven Spach pulled free and was wide open in the middle of the field for the Warner pass, netting 25 yards and securing the win.

When Indy and San Diego met in San Diego, you could just feel this was going to be one hell of a game. Indy came in hot, easily winning themselves a wild card spot, whereas San Diego had a chip on their shoulder, just barely winning the AFC West after a long season, involving some calls that cost them wins. Ladanian Tomlinson was announced just before the game to have a groin injury, but would suit up anyways. It didn't matter, Darren Sproles pointed out why he had proved such a great backup to LT. At 5'8" and 180lbs, he wasn't supposed to be an everydown back, but he was and more, returning kicks and catching passes out of the backfield. The entire game the two teams went back and forth, finally coming to the last two minutes of the game. San Diego was down by 7 and driving, two crucial passes to Antonio Gates, setting up Sproles to spring through a giant hole created by the offensive line and the tying TD. This drew the two teams into overtime, San Diego winning the toss. A trio of crucial penalties were drawn by Indys defense, each breathing life back into San Diego, till they reached the red zone. The first run, Sproles lost two yards, but on the second, he found the seam he needed, breaking tackles as he ran in for the winning TD.

Two great games down, two more today as Baltimore travels to Miami, and Philadelphia travels to Minnesota.

Both great games and I look forward to the match-ups today.
The NFL is a sport I enjoy watching even if I don't understand everything about it.

Seems that my state had a record setting team this year. Why is it again they aren't in the playoffs?

Go Lions

I'm just looking forward to next season when Detroit makes a ten-game turn around and makes the playoffs. Hey, Miami did it.

But Miami had all of scouries' Alt supporting them. That's one hell of a big fan base!

I love Football.....
My boys came in second in the AFC.... one lose kept them out of the number one seed.... but that makes them hungry to win.

And so we have game #3 of the weekend going, already into the second quarter. This time its rookie Joe Flacco's Baltimore Ravens vs NFL Comeback Player of the Year Chad Pennington's Miami "Wildcat" Dolphins, whom, after going 1-15 last year, won the AFC East over the NE Patriots and NY Jets. The score is tied 3-3 with the big story being the defenses. The favorite at the moment is Miami, but Baltimore is a good, solid team with a strong running game as well. This one could be close as well folks.

I'm cheering for Miami just so I can give scouries crap when the Chargers beat the Dolphin's ass. :D

Pit vs SD.....
e-boy

Hey Bel.... wanna wager?
*grins kidding*

The high temp next Sunday in Pittsburgh is forecast to be 20 degrees.

What did I do to deserve this?

And its Philly off to play the NY Giants next week. They beat the Vikings 26-14 in a tight game going into the 4th quarter.

Akers was 3/3 in field goals, Asante Samuel returned an interception for a TD, DeSean Jackson had two huge punt returns, and Westbrook took a screen play and turned it into a 71yd TD reception. You could tell the game was pretty much over when Westbrook scored the TD. Minnesota came out just looking more defeated after that.

I'd like to see the Panthers play the Giants again, with a different outcome this time. And less wind.

Don't really have a favorite in the AFC, beyond a fondness for the Steelers, mostly because I like Roethlisberger (not that I dislike the others).

Mmmm well I'm thinking the NFC Championship will be Philly vs Carolina with AFC being San Diego vs Tenn

The Chargers and Eagle peaking, eh? Could be.

Could be. The Eagles have shutout the NY Giants in Giants stadium recently and their defense is playing quite well.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Steelers beat the Chargers, but San Diego just seemed to have that look.

The NFL is such a balanced league because of salary caps that I don't see a clear favorite for the Superbowl this year. With the exception of Arizona and Atlanta I believe that every other team in it has a legitimate shot at getting to the Superbowl.

My biggest beef with the NFL is that I'd like to see them call penalties the same against each team. It does get frustrating watching games, close or not, get decided on not just bad calls, but seemingly intentional bad calls. It happened all year. Kept some teams out of the playoffs, took one out so far. A close game can really be decided by just a few. Some refs need to lose their jobs, having such a deep history of this kind of thing.

That said, it was a pretty good weekend of football. Not sure how much longer I will pay attention to the NFL, but it's the only game in town.

1958 professional football:

12 teams in the league.
The average franchise changed hands for about $1 million.
The entire season consisted of 12 games and 1 championship game.
The average player was paid $6,000 a year and worked in the off-season.

2008 professional football:

32 teams in the league.
The average franchise is worth $1 billion.
The season is now 16 games followed by 4 post-season games.
The average player is paid $2,200,000.

The average ticket price is $85 and many season ticket holders are required to purchase pre-season game tickets and possess personal seat licenses ("PSLs"). The result: the average cost for one season ticket is well in excess of $900 per seat!

1958 NFL
Eastern Conference........Western Conference
Cleveland............................. Baltimore
New York............................. Chicago Bears
Philadelphia........................ Detroit
Pittsburgh............................ Green Bay
Chicago Cardinals............... Los Angeles
Washington.......................... San Francisco

The Cardinals have dusted of Edgerrin James and rediscovered the run! If Boldin can recover in time they could have a chance playing the cardiac cats next weekend :)

I remember reading somewhere (think on NFL.com) the analysts idea of fixing the bad calls.... make the refs that screwed it up PAY the difference in money on the game.... example that horrible call earlier in the season where they took away a TD made my Polamalu that after the game the refs said was a good TD because the error was not on him but on the second or third part of that entire sequence of plays and it cost the betting industry like $10 million dollars on the swing.... thought that had a nice ring to it

Another play off day......
