I googled, but couldn't find the answer so...

I have an older desktop computer that I'd like to limp along until windows 7 comes out in 2010.

The website says this about the computer: "The motherboard is theoretically designed to support 2.0 gigabytes (GB) of memory based on 512 Mbit technology. However, this technology has not been validated on this motherboard. Gateway and Intel have qualified this board for 1 gigabyte (GB) of memory."

It's got 512MB in it now. Tech said it should handle 2GB, but it might burn out the socket or memory sooner rather than later, but he really didn't know.

What bad things could happen if I put in another 1GB stick?

Your computer refusing to start until you take it out again.

Either it works, or it doesn't. I'd be really surprised if anything worse happened.

Why not play it safe and throw in another 512? That ought to jazz it up a bit.

The 1 is only a few buck more and I can always take the 512 out if it doesn't recognize it for some reason. Thanks.

Put the 1 gig in the first socket and the 512 in the next. It shouldn't burn up anything unless there is a case cooling problem. Just make sure to clean the case inside and all the ports.

What TXRad said.

Will do with the placement. I had planned on giving a good dusting. It's got a lot of clearance around it. Appreciate it.

Go to www.crucial.com. There is a utility that you can download that will peer into your computer's soul and tell you what it can handle, memory-wise. You can even order it directly from them.

I've used this utility many times with computers both new and old. Very reliable.....Carney
