No, chances are very, very unlikely he is dead. Although the KCNA released pictures, they are undated and the wrong season. Furthermore, a doctor confirmed (as far as confirmations go) he treated Kim Jong Il when he originally denied it. Question is, why is he opening up now when things of this nature are a closely guarded secret?

At any rate, for a number of reasons, I am convinced he is still living.

However, I think he has a good chance of death this year because of his reported health issues. I also believe death by coup (Like Nicolae) is very unlikely.

The immediate reaction by most people would be "Yay, the dictator is dead!" While I would be celebrating, there are too many unknowns if Kim Jong Il should die suddenly. There are many, many factors and could take up a whole book, but I will try to be brief as possible:

1. The entire political and strategic scene will change. Does the ROK, China, Japan, United States, Russia, et al really want North Korea gone despite the feel good talk? Each has its own reasons.

2. Because Kim Jong Il dies does not necessarily mean regime change, although it is more likely. Also, regime change does not mean the installment of a new regime is for the better. Furthermore, regime change, death, or de-Kimmification does not mean the failure of the state itself. There are many other things to discuss in this area.

3. The humanitarian effort will be huge.

The list goes on and on, but there are a series of OPLANs, which hopefully will respond timely to these changes if they occur.
