Wow, can you imagine if the genders were reversed in this video?

I think that ad was offensive - to women.

OK, I get the whole "what if it was a woman who was pushed into the doghouse, huh?", and true, it would be wrong to imprison anyone because he or she gives lousy gifts.

However, in the real world, where I live, people realize that it was a joke. A pretty bad joke, but a joke nevertheless. People don't lock their spouses up to punish them for giving thoughtless gifts. The ad is about a fantasy, about how women wish they had that kind of power over their men.

The ugly truth behind this fantasy is that women CAN put their husbands in an imaginary doghouse by sulking, by cooking his least favourite dinners, by not wanting to have sex, etc. And this is what women do if they don't get what they want, according to the message of this ad.

This paints a terrible picture of women as being greedy, shallow house slaves who have to be bribed with jewellery to do their "wifely duties". You cheated on your wife? Buy her a necklace. You never do your part of the household chores? Buy her some earrings. You lost your temper and hit her in the face? Buy her a diamond ring.

Because women are greedy bitches who will forgive everything if you pay her enough.

Good analysis, I think. LaJack should be happier with the video now.

And THAT is highly similar to the criticism I cited earlier by that other woman poster "Trixie from Toronto".

Another good reason why I'd have fired the jackhole who made this ad.

Yes, double standards are evil. I believe that both double standards exist, simultaneously, perversely enough.

And, yes, it pisses me off. What else is new? Except that I am convinced that society is sick, anyway. It will always be sick, as long as it embraces the Manichean world-view of good vs. evil, matter vs. spirit, light vs. darkness. Until the Stoic/Aristotlean ethic of the four chief virtues (especially balance or moderation) returns to dominance, society will suffer from its perverse world-view, one that makes people loathe themselves for being the hairy, hungry, horny primates that we really are.

But enough of that rant. Yes, men are being bashed. It's another dualism, and as such, inherently unrestrained. Men are the new evil....

As long as Ben and Jerry's has all those flavors, I'm good.

On "Home Improvement" Tim was almost always portrayed as a buffoon, and his oldest sons were also. The other male characters were shown as being "progressive" and Tim's wife, Jill, was practically the star of "Mother Knows Best." The show had one of the hottest women I ever saw on TV, but I don't know what her name was. I don't mean Pam Anderson, although she was a bit of alright too. The one I am thinking of was a brunette.

"The Man Show" was the kind of show you ae thinking of, but it was never that popular and didn't stay on the air very long. I don't even know if it was a network show or not.

For every show like that, there are probably a dozen where the men are shown to be idiots and bunglers. Dagwood and Blondie would be a good example.

When I mentioned Home Improvement, it was one of the first of the 'typical male' examples I could think of. Granted, Tim's wife in the show, Patricia Richardson, did a good job of showcasing how annoyed she often became with his 'man's man' attitude, even if he did not always portray it at home.

Essentially, I just wanted to point out the idiocy of bashing either sex. The video clip was just another example of pushing a stereotype to a point where it became more than a little laughable.

It was, after all, only a joke. ;)

Tell that to Andrew Dice Clay...

Gladly. Do you have the number to the room of the rehab clinic in which he's staying?

Alas, another failed project. He showed such self-humility in that "Ford Fairlane" movie, after all . . . .

Do you remember how women threw a major fit during his hey day?

There was no "lighten up" when he was around, no "it's a joke, sheesh" in response to him. There were only pitchforks and torches.

There was no "it's a joke, sheesh," because he wasn't funny...not even a little bit.

"You fucking cunt, you fucking cock-sucking, whoring ugly bitch!!!"

Anyone who find that FUNNY needs to get his head examined. I like listening to the comedy channel, but I always switch it off whenever they air his woman-hating rants.

I think we can all accept that, since at least the Sixties, TV has been showing people mostly in a bad light, especially on sitcoms. However, IMHO, more men are shown in such a light, and they are generally shown in a worse light than women. For every beautiful bimbo such as Kelly Bundy, there is a handsome but ignorant oaf such as Jethroe Bodiney (Beverly Hillbillies), and there are more of the latter. Has there ever been a female character who could match the boorishness of Archie Bunker? Or the bumbling incompetence of Col. Klink? Or the avarice of Mr. Drysdale?

He wasn't funny because he offended women.

Jokes about women are never considered funny.

Not true - at least, for me. I've laughed like hell at blonde jokes...brunette jokes, too, but he just flat-out wasn't funny.
