I cammed with someone the other night on Yahoo, and a couple minutes after we started my virus scanner poped up saying I had a trojan horse! I freaked out and disconnected... what the hell? What a psycho.

Yeah...

Camming is serious bizzness.

I would be less worried about getting a virus and more worried about them recording me and what they intend to do with the footage. There are programs capable of capturing anything on your screen, including another person's webcam.

Exactly... brrr... 101 reasons not to cyber... or send nude pics (you never know where on the web those will wind up)... or cam.... this internet thing is really dodgy. One cannot be too careful.

I wouldn't do any of the above until I've met him/her in the flesh and got to know them

Sometimes anti-virus can look at a webcam as a virus, since it is connecting to your computer and working with it. I dont think i've ever heard of a virus being spread via webcam. It usually involves a link to a website or something you download.

Just watch what you think its a good thing to download too.

My brother picked up a nasty trojan that masks itself as a free antivirus programme. He had the pop up come up on a website and downloaded it thinking he was doing the right thing, 3 weeks later he's running to me with his laptop yelling "I've picked up a virus, help!!!".

i spent like 4 hours trying to sort it out.

Lesson? Only get REPUTABLE free antivirus programmes off the net. Don't just download it cos it says its an antivirus programme.

AVG is the best free AV software. I highly recommend it. Add on ZoneAlarm, a software firewall that alerts you anytime something tries to "dial home" or anything, and you've got pretty good defenses. Spybot S&D is decent antispyware too.

This is why I don't have a web cam, do IM's or download from any but the most reputable sites. (Of course, I still ended up getting a virus, when I downloaded an AV Security Suite from COMCAST of all places. I spent 3 hours on the phone with the tech guy who finally told me that at least 6 other customers had it happen to them within just 3 days. I had to completly wipe my drive clean, install Windows 98, JUST to get my upgrade of XP on it and lost EVERYTHING completly including pics of someone dear, that I know longer have "hard copies" of. I was furious. The one good thing, Comcast gave us one month free after that, to give us a break for all the trouble. I now use a program that was recommened by several PC techs. I'm not entirely happy with it yet, but oh well, it's free!!)

Always exercise caution when downloading anything!! Keep your Firewall and Anti-Virus up to date!! (Stepping off soapbox now!!)
