Watchdog Dads

Saw an interesting little story on the news. Apparently there is a group called "Watchdog Dads" where dads [and uncles and grandfathers] go to their child's school for a day or two. They help out in minor ways with the class, but mostly they are there to keep an eye out for violence and such. The teachers interviewed are actually enjoying the help and early reports are that incidents are lower in schools that participate.

Had not heard about this yet. But I would like to know more about this program. I have to time and would be willing to help out in the schools my Grandchildren go to.

I don't know about your particular school and shouldn't speak for them, but I do know our school welcomes visitors, especially if they're willing to lend a hand. The first graders like to have someone listen to them read, for example.

I'm a shame to say I never really been that involved with their schools. Guess my thinking was like it was back in the old days when I went to school, they didn't like parents coming into the schools.

They just started locking the schools down here during the day. That scares me I think this sounds more like what they need than locking the doors. I just found the web site for Watchdog Dads. I hope its OK to post it. I getting ready to leave on vaction in less than a couple of weeks. when I get back I think I will be talking to the schools around here about trying to start a program like this.

We started the program at my school last year.

It's still new, but things look very positive.

Any way to get parents involved in the schools is a good thing.
