That's a pretty broad topic. Different types of stories have different readers, and these have different requirements as to what will keep them interested. For example, I write gay erotic fiction and there are people who will lose interest immediately if there is gay sex in a story no matter how interesting it might be to them in other ways.
Likewise, some people can be interested in a very slow moving story if it has elements they like, while others can only maintain interest in a story that moves fast and has a lot of action.
Can you narrow down your focus on this topic? What do you really want to discuss?
