Whoa. Whadda know?As protesters took to the streets for a fifth day, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday expressed hope that the California Supreme Court would overturn Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that outlawed same-sex marriage. In an interview with CNN, Schwarzenegger also predicted that the 18,000 gay and lesbian couples who have wed already would not see their marriages nullified by the initiative.
"It's unfortunate, obviously, but it's not the end," he said about the same-sex marriage ban. "I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area."
You know when Arnold first took office I was neither enthusiastically for him or against him (I didn't vote for him). I was willing to see how he did--and hoping he didn't make California into too much of a joke--always the danger when a state elects a movie star into that kind of position. At first, he fell flat as a pancake and was, indeed, a joke (that embarrassing "girly-man" comment of his!). Then he got better, and during the fires he really came through.
Now...now I'm going to be sad to see him go. His none-too-good speech calling Obama "skinny" aside, he's become a pretty practical politician.
