This is good news,

I sure hope Obama approves stem cell research. I was actually wondering about that the other night.

Well, no more of an anti-science administration. There is some hope for the future, after all.

Don't go counting those chickens just yet.

While I voted for Obama, and I love the guy, I am fully aware that he is still a politician. Policy is one thing. Application, another.

But I'm not entirely cynical. I'll be hoping that this, too, will come to be.

The article also mentions that Obama may reverse GWB's order on allowing more drilling for oil. Better gas up your cars now! Prices could triple when the speculators hear this......Carney

I'll reserve my opinion until late 2012. ;)

The simple reality is there have been abouit 150 treatments developed from adult stem cells and none from embryonic.

As for an aids cure? I won't hold my breath since there is not one cure for any virus.
There are vaccinations for prevention but not one cure ever!

Stem cell research is something that almost everybody favors. After all, you can hardly call those tiny lumps of protoplasm human. Besides that, those that don't get implanted in a womb or used in expeiments, usually get flushed down the toilet.

I've already bought a hybrid. You're behind the curve if you haven't.

That's great DP. VERY scientific.

(We just won't mention all the things that COULDN'T be developed with embryonic stem cell research because GWB wouldn't fund it or that anything that was done with adult stem cells could be done as well or BETTER with embryonic stem cells.)

I remember an interview with George and Laura immediately following his refusal to allow research.

Laura, shaking her head, saying the same thing DP just said.

I'm so pleased that the current disregard for all things intellectually scientific will soon be coming to an end.

Erm, have you cosidered what's the cause and effect there? In order to develop treatments, you need to do the research. Base research on embryonic stem cells is severely lagging compared to adult cells. Even without the political obstacles, it's something that scientists started looking at much later. it took a long time before adult stem cell research yielded any practical results too.

Quoted from npr.org:

Q: Critics of embryonic stem-cell research say those cells have never cured anyone. Is that true?

A: True, but pointless.

Transplanting a kidney never cured anybody until someone had the idea of trying it, and then worked out the regimen that would prevent a transplanted kidney from being rejected by its grateful recipient. The proper way to phrase the statement is "embryonic stem cells haven't cured anybody yet."

But yes, let's be realistic and not expect an instant cure for AIDS, cancer and Country music just yet. Truth is, we don't know what ebryonic stem cells can do.

The issue is that many of the best scientific minds in the world, those in US and some other countries' research institutions, are currently not allowed to find out.

Generally speaking, when you don't know something, but think the knowledge would be very useful, it's a good idea to find out. That's called Research.
