I think I scorched some paint today

Well today I put the carbs back in the bike. Whoever designed this bike had to be a direct decendant of the Marque De Sade. (Either that or the former owner had a truly warped sense of humor and put in an oversized Air Box.)

I carried the carbs out to the bike and broke out the tools box and radio. I lit a cigar and got to work. It took some work but I eased the carbs halfway in and stopped to hook up the choke and throttle cables. My wife brought out a cup of coffee. I took a bit of a break and then back to work I went.

It took three hours and a lot of cussing, not to mention half a pot of coffee to get the carbs back in place. Again I took a short break before hooking things up. That's when I realised I had misrouted the Choke Cable. Oh man the language was going fast and furious then. I truly did not want to remove the carbs again to re-route that blasted cable. Thankfully I found another way to pull the choke so I could remove and re-run the cable.

By the time I had everything hooked up it was dark and the wife was holding the shop light for me. I grabbed the keys for the bike and after kicking it over a few times I got it to start. (Heave a great sigh of relief.) It ran like absolute shit but it ran.

I started checking things out and was more than surprised when I realized that good old number four wasn't firing at low RPM's. Even the wife flinched at the language coming out of me now.

I shut down the bike and packed up the tools. It was dark and the wife was getting tired of holding the light for me. I was grumbling as I came inside to wash up. Man this is a bit disapointing.

Now the bike will sit once more for the next three days. (Work) On Tuesday I'll start checking things out again. At least now I know it's not the Carbs.

One of these days I'll get the blasted thing running correctly.

Until then I suppose I'll keep scaring the neighbors and scorching the paint off walls with my language.

We are, indeed, slaves to our passions. Hope you get it worked out soon. :)

Partial obstruction of a port?

Doesn't look like it. Cleaned the carbs like you wouldn't believe. (Twice each and then inspected with bright light and loop.)

We'll see what I find on Tuesday. I'll be doing the compression test again then checking the Coil, wiring and Plug.

The coil though does seem to be good as it fires two plugs and the other seems to be firing just fine.

Like I said we'll see what I find on Tuesday.

How does the bike handle "ignition advance?" Running Rough at low RPM sounds like a timing problem or a stuck vacuum advance, but I'm not sure how it would affect just one cylinder -- or one cylinder more than the others.

Ignition Advance is done by Vacuum and seems to be working fine.

Like I said this seems to be affecting just one cylinder hence my at first thinking it was the carbs.

Tuesday I will be checking not only the Cylinders themselves, (By checking their compression.) but the wiring and Plug.

We shall see.

I asked because I had the engine out of a 1950's vintage Matchless Twin at one time and the timing advance was a complicated centrifigal arrangement on the magneto that could stick for one cylinder and not the other.
