A prayer for Florida from Carl Hiaasen:

Despite what the crazy TV preachers say, we don't really know whether You're a red God or blue God, Republican or Democrat or independent. All we want is an even break.

So please remember Florida in your blessings on Tuesday. Deliver us from scandal, Lord. Let our optical-scanners perform flawlessly. Let the trucks that carry our precious ballot boxes not be hijacked and later abandoned behind a strip joint, and let those who count those ballots be pure of character and pretty good with math.

Most of all, Lord, let there be no need for lawyers. But if, in Your infinite wisdom, You see a need to test the faith of this great country with another electoral crisis, please consider doing it in Virginia or Ohio, or maybe North Carolina.

God, anywhere but here. Amen.

With so many people early voting Florida may escape crisis this year.

Yes, my whole (nuclear) family voted early. We wanted to make ABSOLUTELY SURE that nothing went wrong this time.

They had early voting in all the libraries in my town, and the crowds, even on Saturday, reached traffic-hindering proportions.

If Obama wins, it's going to be interesting to see how people conduct themselves in my church. North Florida is very heavily Republican, and my church is even worse. You may wonder how I came to join it. Well, I have lived in a lot of places, and it's been my custom to attend a Methodist church wherever I've been. In J'ville, I joined the one which was most logistically convenient and had the best choir. I've made some good friends there, and everybody has been very nice to me, and most important, they were always nice to my son, who was a special-needs kid (Asperger syndrome). However, year by year I've felt like a mangy coyote (not dangerous or of enough consequence to be an actual wolf in sheep's clothing) among the increasingly rampant Republican (not small-r republican) spirit there.

The first time my son went to an Obama rally, he brought home some bumper stickers, and he gave me one, which I put on the back of my car. The other night I found it missing, and thought someone had stolen it. Come to find out, when we'd gone to a Sunday School social at someone's house, my husband had taken it off and put it in the back seat. That's the kind of atmosphere we'd found ourselves breathing--as if, as either Democrats (the guys) or a NPA who generally votes democratic (me), we had to be in the closet.

Today when I went to my car after church, I found that the Obama/Biden sticker was back on my car. My son had put it back. So I guess we're out. Why should this be? What should we have to fear? This is America, damn it! Not some tinpot banana republic dictatorship or the Soviet Union or something. This isn't the 50s! JOE MCCARTHY IS DEAD!!!!!

It has filled me with disgust and sorrow to reflect what a low, mean age we seem to be living in.

Our tiny congregation rents out the facilities to another twelve organizations, two of which are what we consider less theologically sophisticated churches. Last week someone put a 'Yes on 8' sign on the front lawn. Excuse me? This is our property and our position is strongly NO. It hasn't been seen since . . .

We went out for breakfast this morning and had a brief but lovely discussion with an elderly couple. He was proudly wearing an Obama for Change T-shirt, and as they walked by us to leave we complimented him on it and shared some good thoughts.

They'd already voted, he said, and they exchanged thumbs up with our kids.

It was nice.

Given the high degree of voter registration and voting fraud likely to happen in say, Chicago, Florida has less of a reason to worry its ballots, early or otherwise.
