Having a discussion with some one else and they want to know when specifically the Old Style was used in BDSM and if it is still around?

Sorry for the question but had to come here to the experts to find the answer to it! Thanks for your help all.

And by the way love that the old place is still here. Y`all take care and have a nice day!:D

Old Guard sounds better than the "BDSM in the Retirement Home" image I got when I read "Old Style BDSM".

I've been around the BDSM and Leather Scenes for 10+ years and never heard of "Old Style".

What are you referring to?

BDSM in North America is derived from gay motorcycle clubs that were around after troops returned from WWII. That's where calling a leather-clad guy "sir" comes from, along with some of the older slave poses, and so on. Because they were organized groups, they had sets of rules (which are uncommon nowadays, since BDSM households, rather than clubs, now predominate), and those rules differed quite a bit from club to club. Some did things like starting off novices as subs, then, after some apprenticeship, letting them try their hand at switching, eventually working their way up to being doms - but others had no such rule. So sweeping generalities don't really apply.

Something else that doesn't apply is any historical basis for hetero BDSM groups that predate the mid 1960s. Out here on the west coast, a computer scientist named Robin Roberts started the Menlo Park School of Bondage in 1967, and all hetero BDSM traditions here derive from that pioneering group. Similar things happened in places like NYC. But if you look for evidence of "Old Guard" BDSM groups prior to the mid 1940s, whether gay or straight, you're not going to find any, just a lot of fancy stories which resemble attempts to derive the Freemasons from the Knights Templar.

Jay Wiseman is the person to look to if you want the complete story. He's researched the field very thoroughly, and is a great guy, if you look over what he's written and have any questions, I'm sure he'd be happy to answer them.

Well sorry maybe I was as clear as mud?! Was looking for the old style of BDSM like in the use of protocols and different steps that were needed to be fulfilled before one was collared?

Some say the "Old Style" referring to the proper lessons commonly given in order for a slave or sub to progress up thru training.

Or was there any such thing?

Any help with this will be nice as its a on going debate at another site.

I thought that there was a certain period when Manners and Protocol had to be followed? Could be wrong? But figure you people here would know more than anyone!

Depends on the manners and protocol of your peers.

Also, I think it's worth noting that fetishists and pros have existed since the dawn of time and the seventies contact mags are actually owed some consideration.

What you seem to be referring to is what is known as "Old Guard" BDSM, which is little followed here, though I understand it's more prevalent in Europe (from what I hear). It's commonly considered to be a very structured environment, with specific protocols and training steps/programs. I don't *know* of any Old Guard establishments in the U.S., but that doesn't mean there aren't any - there are *some* things in life I don't know. ;)

Are you maybe thinking of the Gorean Lifestylers? I can't say I know much about it but I do know that their practise of BDSM is highly ritualised, with lots of rules and protocols.

I have no idea how long they've been going as a society though.
