Some asshole cloned my debit card and went on an online gambling spree. My net worth is currently in minus numbers. This comes in the same month that I've moved house and my business is fledgling, with more than a few teething problems to iron out before it becomes profitable.

*sigh*

So I figured I'd whore myself out and do some cyber-favours for you guys. :D

Any takers?

*hugs*

I'm sorry, darlin. Does your bank have any sort of anti-fraud or identity theft protections that can help you recover the money? Mine does, but I have no clue about UK banks.

This kind of thing is why we still need public floggings, the stocks, etc...

If it was on your debit card than that money is FDA insured. You need to go to the bank and fill out a shit load of paperwork, and sign stuff swearing you didn't spend that stuff, etc. You CAN get your money back. How quickly depends on your bank, and how many assholes there are at the bank.

Been there, done that, got that tshirt THREE TIMES.

Oh goodness, dear. I'm so sorry. I hope everything turns out okay!

I'm so sorry to hear that this has happened to you! I hope it all works out all right. Good luck!

A woman I used to work with had the same thing happen - and it was her bank to tell her! Apparently they're (the banks) are getting quite good at catching/tracking people for credit card theft and most of the time the person (owner of the card) isn't left out of pocket. I guess it all depends on the bank and their insurance.
I hope all works out okay.

I'm telling you, it's bank theft and therefore covered by the FDA insurance. Sadly enough, quite often the victim gets treated badly, like they're lying or idiots, but it's worth it if you get the money back. Plus, if they give you too much shit about getting it back to you, I'd wait until you have it all and then close the account.

Very sorry to hear that, Velvet. Wish I could offer something more than just my sympathies.

Public floggings and stocks are good things... ohhhh... you didn't mean in the playtime sense. Sorry.

As Homburg pointed out, UK banks might not have the same rules/protections US banks do. (And by the way, it's the FDIC {Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation} not the FDA {Food & Drug Administration}.) ;)

Good luck, Velvet!

My bank's security people are a little too good at this.

When I tried to buy my euros, it took me 3 times because they kept cancling my card thinking it was stolen....this is even after I had talked to them telling them I was making the purchase, and after I had bought a plane ticked to dublin (which was just slightly less than the euro).

It does, thankfully. The process of recovering the money will take a few weeks though, so I'm on scraps from Master's plate till then.

Or five minutes in a locked room with your dear self. Oh how I wish...

They have records of when I physically used the card with chip/pin security so it should be fairly simple to prove the other transactions aren't mine. My card has been stopped and internet banking suspended till I have all new security questions. I have to sign a statement declaring which transactions I authorised. After that, they'll refund the money plus any bank charges incurred so I shouldn't end up out of pocket. Meantime, my direct debits for utilities etc have bounced and a couple of recent transactions of mine that were pending have become casualties. It's all just such an inconvenience.

Thanks for all the commiserations and hugs guys. They do mean a lot.

It's good that its going to get all sorted out honey, it just bites the big one that its going to take a few weeks to sort it out.

Banks are all too willing to take your money in 10 seconds flat, but something goes wrong and they have to sort out out a refund, it takes weeks!

Yikes, we had a similar thing happen with our American Express debit cards a month ago. Fortunately, AmEx phoned us that night to ask if it had been us spending up on the card as it was in another city, and not usual purchases for us. They ran up close to 2000Euro in goods, all of which AmEx wiped from our account immediately and issued new cards which arrived in the mail 2 days later...and the twits are on camera spending up with our copied cards, so no way to talk their way out of it when caught.:D

That's horrible Velvet :( I hope they catch the arsehole and give him/her a good walloping

I hope everything is sorted out without too much inconvenience. Well, any inconvenience is too much in a situation like this. I'm glad that it is being sorted out though.

Theres supposed to be gangs of eastern europeans roaming the length and breadth of the land tampering with bank machines and ripping off peoples bank accounts. Hope everything gets sorted relativley quickly doll.

Glad to hear things will be sorted out, albeit slowly.
