The California Council of Churches IMPACT has released the following statement:

PROPOSITION 8
Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry.

Recommendation: OPPOSE.

"Marriage throughout history has undergone massive transformations. While contemporary churches and religious institutuions may still be wrestling with the religious issues around marriage equality, we can still support secular civil rights. No church is or should be forced sanctify any union it does not approve. IMPACT strongly supports the full inclusion of all adults in the right to marry. This moral commitment to equality is consistent with the findings of the California State Supreme Court. The only threat to conventional marriage comes from within a marital union -- divorce, infidelity, disloyalty -- not from without. Committed fully-equal relationshiips between consenting adults strengthen our socitey. They do not undermine it."

Safe, you might want to have your neighbors across the street throw this in their reprobate pastor's face.

~ Big ultra mega uber supersized thank you hug, VM ~

I doubt that most of the churches that are pro Prop 8 care, however. The minister of the one my neighbors attend(ed?) is one of the main spokespersons for the Pro Prop 8 supporters. LINK

It is still going to be a hard won battle. Hopefully, the California Council of Churches has a sister organization in Florida to help fight against Florida Prop 2 as well.

Churches that recognise secular civil rights? That surprises me in a way. I wish it didn't and hope that in the future it won't, that it will be the norm.

The mainstream churches in the U.S. have a long history of supporting civil rights. It wasn't the fundamentalists that rode with MLK, it was the Anglicans, the Methodists, the Lutherans and the Presbytarians. The Fundies were segregationists!

Yeah, true. Rationally I know that, but I'm still trying to get past my subconcious over generalizations. :(

Considering that Jesus was one of the first religious figures to say that a commoner was equal with a king... one of the first to bring up the separation of church and state... and an outspoken opponent of discrimination against gentiles...

They are following in His footsteps.

Which is, after all, what He said to do.

PROP 8
if you think love
SUCKS

That's entirely too complex for a mind simple enough to back Prop 8. I'll probably come up with something that refers to the Council of Jerusalem in Acts. That's even worse, most likely, but it allows me to show off.

Uh Kat, that's not a religious group, that's the main body of churches for the entire state. All the biggies except a few closet Satanist Fundies. Lutherans, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Methodists, etc.
