This is a serious question. Is the Republican party about to enter a phase like it did between 1930-1950, maybe never to recover?

Im sure many on here will rejoice about that and not have anything to say that adds to the topic but it is a very important time for the party.

I ask because there isnt any young Republicans that motivate like Obama. The Republican message is almost never a easy one to swallow. And when Republicans start sound more like Democrats, it is even worse!

Will the Republican party become a very small minority now?

The Republican'ts got thumped pretty soundly in 1964, but rebounded nicely in 1972.

Rolling Stone magazine thinks so. At least, that was the subject of their latest issue.

Yeah I know but Nixon was around (1960) and showed promise for the future. I dont think there is anyone in the party like that. And if Bobby hadnt got shot in 1968 it is possible Nixon would have NEVER been president.

The party is a mess.

I guess the only hope for the party is in 2002 the Democrats were a disaster as well. But to the Democrats credit, their message stayed the same (for the most part).

Huh?

Are you crazy?

they are if they dont change their platform. changing demographics and american attitudes will ensure it :D

The Republican Party and the Democratic Party are twins from birth.

When one dies, so will the other. And I believe that will happen in our lifetime (assuming you're about my age).

They are two ends of a pendulum balancing itself out.

Things are looking grim for the Reps.

It did recover from the '30s, though. They were in even worse shape in 1974, and won both the presidency and Senate 6 years later.

I do think they need to change their approach. It's pretty clear now that the Reagan coalition can no longer elect a president, and it's becoming hard to even compete while writing off everyone who's nonwhite. But defeat tends to focus the mind, and I'm sure it will happen to the GOP. And it needs to, since a strong two-party system is in everyone's best interest.

Wrong, you and I dont always agree but I think this is a very good answer. Here is the problem, there isnt anyone on the horizon to lead the party.

They do change.

They critique Bush, they embrace gay rights, they admit the existence of global warming, they embrace minorities.

Their economic policies don't change much, but the have to change their social policies time and time again to keep up with the increasing liberalness of American social ideals.

Id like them to keep doing what their doing

they dont represent me in hardly any way.

Generally the democratic party doesnt represent me, but that does not mean it doesnt serve a good purpose. Nor does it mean it hasnt done some good.

Over half the country identifies with being conservative in some fashion. We're at war, the economy is tanking, and the weak are looking for Uncle Sam to make it all better.

So lets say you are correct. I think up until about 2004 the country was leaning republican. But who is going to lead the party? Bobby Jindel? I dont know? There is just no backbone in the party and no good leaders. When people like J C Watts left, that should show you something. The party is in shambles and probably needs to get their butts kicked.

Assuming I am correct is always a good starting point. :D Where was OB 5 years ago? You don't seriously think in a country of 200 million there isn't one likable republican? I have my I on a young kid right here in central IL. Bush few out here just to see him. Conservatives aren't going away. In poor economic times the churches seem to fill up. Family values float back to the top.

How many times can a guy be called an uncle tom and not take it personally?

Actually he gave on of the best speeches at the 04 convention (which I know is only 4 years ago) and people who actually followed politics knew to watch out for him. I dont think anyone thought it would happen this fast, it was supposed to be Hillary's turn (sorry KRC) but they saw him as a bright star in the party.

Still no one for the Republicans. Im sure someone will rise up but I dont think anyone knows who that is yet. And again, there is a total lack of leadership in the party. Maybe Haley Barbour but he is probably past his prime.

If not Uncle Sam, then who, Bert?

I'm surprised no one is calling this a massive correction. Sitting here my living room, my house doesn't seem like it is worth 5 times what I bought it for. Looks like the same old house, except for all the work I put in it.

Do you really think the country will rally around OB? We're going to have another president elected on a slim popular vote margin.

Still no one for the Republicans.

There's always Palin and Huckabee. I doubt either could be elected President, but I could see them heading a ticket.

I said earlier that the Republicans' bad luck is that they had an obvious person to run this year, but he just as obviously couldn't run: Jeb Bush.

Both parties have a knack for royally screwing up and providing ample motivation for the opposition.

You don't see any young emerging Republican leaders? Look down that pitch black tunnel called "nowhere". It's where Obama "came out of" less than two years ago.

I guarantee you there is a Republican in there somewhere getting ready. Just waiting for Democrats to fuel his or her campaign, as the Republicans did this one.
